Constantine A Whole World Out There

Had to do a bit of staring and thinking when the episode ended.
Which is a win for a horror show, and this was a good subtle one.
There's a murder ghost, which, sure, obviously a problem.
But there's also John's friend researching how to make a world of his own, and getting tempted to stay in it.
... speaking as someone who leaves the house for an hour a week I did have to have some thoughts about that one..,
The bit of the horror where something was hunting students who did a magic from a book? Seen that.
The rest not so much.
The horror was that the ghost could make any world he pleased, any at all, and he made a crappy house suitable for murdering students in, and then used it to murder students.
He reckoned he would be as a god in his own realm, and then it was such a tiny creation.
And it starts with a bit where John is taking some time off ie sitting around getting drunk, and he argues that even god took a day's rest and gets told god did that after making the universe so that's a bit more work.
So it makes you think about creation, specifically as showcased in Constantine.
Someone did that. All of it.
And then apparently sent angels to tell the free willed bits to do better.
John noticing his angel is getting positively chatty compared to what he said were the rules and being encouraged by that? Specifically saying it's about getting out from the angel's father's rules. We know where John is coming from but at this point he has less information than the audience does about what that angel really thinks. And that he has been tempted.
I want to see what happens next but there's only a couple of episodes now.
The bit where it's about addiction and retreating from the world was a good subtle use of the genre and the story did well at making us care which choice John's friend makes.
Also at showing teaching and the consequences of that. ... pretty sure getting ghost murdered isn't a reasonable consequence of teaching, but, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, that needed to be cured with a lot of knowledge. Teacher and assistant both tried the same thing, to override the ghost's reality, but it only worked for one of them.
Making his own sunrise when the drum beat fear is the Rising Darkness, not subtle but still good.
Good episode that made me sit and think for a while.
Also made me think about John's domain on Legends, the mansion and what he did with it. It was such a convenient trick of the budget I didn't think about it much, but when it was after this... a house in the dark vs a house in the fire. But so many more people to visit it.
My only other note is the subtitlers need to learn how to spell

not with an l.
