Highlander season 4: Brothers in Arms
Jan. 21st, 2006 07:10 pmThere's thinky stuff in this one
but mostly I'm left thinking
Joe Dawson is one hell of an interesting character
owe you my life, not his
that whole dilemma he was stuck with
is great.
Bringing back Charlie solely to kill him, not so great.
And what happened to the peace they were supposed to be building anyway?
Yeah, I know, but it would have been a nicer ending.
The Quickening was good again. They really work at keeping them individual.
Mac's little 'we're different' speech at the end is such bollocks, though. That same situation could have come up with another Immortal. Joe being mortal had bugger all to do with it. Mac was just hurting and decided to put the knife in where Joe couldn't deny it.
Sometimes it gets hard to like Mac.
Actually, I kind of want to write Joe Dawson as the other kind of Watcher now. I realise it would be an entirely different set of issues. But I think he'd fit. And maybe be happier. With the Highlander Watchers he is supposed to kill humans to keep the secret. Plus his 'sometimes you have to do more than just watch' is pretty much contrary to the basic idea of his Watchers. In the Buffyverse Watchers under the old rules it would still be frowned on. Slayers slay, Watchers watch. And what with the legs thing, he isn't exactly going to be a martial arts master or teaching that side of things. (actually, I know there's blind judo and wheelchair archers and all sorts, so I shouldn't make total big statement like that, but he's unlikely to be picked to teach a superpowered girl) But part of what I wanted to explore about the Watchers after the First had a go at them was that the first choice, front line, 'best' people would be the ones the First would go after. Any survivors would likely be dealing with damage. People like Joe who already got used to their disability long ago would actually be well ahead. And with so many Slayers to so few Watchers they'd need all the help they could get, every Watcher that was able to do anything contributing their part. Joe is very able.
If I was making a tv series with the new Watchers Council I'd probably want the actor to play a Watcher. But I'd have to invent a new character.
I know, accent. Not a Brit. But another thing I figure is that the Watchers were always a worldwide organisation. Maybe only the bosses were Brits. And there have to be tons of Watchers we never met. Maybe the London bosses were only boss of Giles, and there were other local bosses. Like Joe Dawson was not in charge in Europe.
