Watchers, borrowing plots
Apr. 2nd, 2006 12:39 pmdreams are freaky
but sometimes full of plot
this one kind of mixed up Highlander style Watchers with the Buffy kind, but not in the been-done xover sense, in the sense that they applied the concept of Hunters to the Buffyverse.
Think about it - 'There is no power greater than the power of man'. Watchers, old school, devoted their lives to two things - controlling the demon population, and controlling the Slayer. Now they find out that the Slayer, as they always suspected, was created by putting demon in her. And suddenly some woman who just months ago tried to destroy the world creates thousands upon thousands more Slayers.
Well obviously she's at it again. Apocalypse, mk II. Slayers are demonic, the Watchers try and keep demons from invading the Earth, so a Watcher's true duty is clear.
Control who they can, destroy where they cannot.
Actually this is all logic once I woke up. In the dream it was more just a final showdown.
There were these two teenage guys who had decided to hunt the Hunters. They were ordinary mortals, so no spells could figure they were sneaking up on a guy. So they were having a lot of success. And as they pointed out, every Slayer has somebody. Parents, siblings, boyfriends, somebody. Hunters want to mess with Slayers? They mess with everyone who cares about them too.
I know, girl power! Slayers wouldn't be messed with! Well lets skip the meta and put in some logic where Hunters figured out a spell. It was just a cool moment in the dream. Kind of like that bit in the Spiderman movie where the bystanders join in.
So these guys prove that the Hunters are never going to win.
And then they end up getting turned all demonic, one vampire and one some weird green thingy, so proving that Slayers are actually really helpful.
So the actually dreamed them bits are less helpful, but the basic idea - scarily logical. Of *course* there would be Hunters.
There was also a pretty. Some conspiracy theory guy had hidden a CD full of key data. (Between the wardrobe and the kipper. It was hanging on a curtain pull between where he kept his clothes and where he had a plastic fish glued to the wall. My dreams are surrealism central.) CD looked all messed up, covered in lumpy paper with holes in, but when you peeled the paper off it was lovely and shiny with a shadowy ouroborous in both sides, like part of the silver of the disc. That was just pretty.
So, okay, it steals central Watcher plot elements from Highlander, but I think it makes interesting sense in the new 'verse.
Like, the CD in the Buffyverse could be an emergency spirit invocation. I mean if you can store an entire demon on a disc, you could have an immortality disc to pour your own self into the computer should something ever happen to your body. Talk about 'backup your data'.
