Doctor Who
Jun. 3rd, 2006 08:00 pmI'm vaguely dissatisfied. I have a feeling a bit like its a refugee from the wrong genre. And yet, there are older stories that resemble many parts, and its kind of fun in itself. I'm just... not sold on this.
In more detail
I kept the sound off until they'd got the initial embarrassment over. I wasn't spoiled, it was just that predictable.
The Ood as harmless good guys was yaay.
But then they screwed that up and made ugly=evil again.
This irritates a lot.
I think they overdid the hubris.
I'm fairly sure that the Doctor, in general, had a habit of using screens and research and knowing at least mostly where he was. I mean he's been off by centuries, but this is a whole other deal. Just plain not knowing? Feels wrong.
It was so utterly obvious they were being set up for a fall.
Actually, nothing that happened in this ep surprised me. The timing even. It was just... that's the other thing that felt wrong, its so by the numbers.
I'm not saying its bad, I'm saying that predictable timing, predictable actions, and all these relatively straight horror bits, add up to feeling too familiar to satisfy.
I can see what they're trying to do. Push the Doctor and Rose just that bit further along what they do anyway, crank up the hubris, and then cut them off from their easy out. Usually the only thing keeping the Doctor involved in a situation is choice. Now he has no way to run.
But right there, we lose one of the things I *like* about the Doctor. He has absolutely no reason to help almost all the time. He helps by choice. He isn't backed into a situation, he finds a situation that needs something done about it. I know, not always, but, I like that aspect. So now? No more choice.
But they're doing it to make sure he's totally in trouble.
The other thing that annoys is they've pushed this 'Lonely God' thing so far that bringing in Satan? Is the obvious next step.
I rather hope he turns out like the Daemon or something, something alien but not off the scale. If he stays as supernatural as he is right now, that puts whatever stops him in the same league. Or to put it another way, if the Doctor defeats the *Actual* devil, that puts him on a level I never wanted him to play at. Lonely God in too many ways.
Time travel is so ample, why do they have to frell with the power levels? Bad Wolf, and now this? NOT cool.
Things I liked...
Well they worked the tats and red contacts.
And the creepy of the untranslateable symbols is nicely done. I mean it depends on the setup that the TARDIS translates everything, so uber creepy.
Pity I'm fairly sure it isn't always so...
The Doctor/Rose bits were at a level I can live with. Talking about house share, or that kiss to the helmet. Initiated by her, phrased in her understanding of the world. I can see that, that works.
The Doctor/TARDIS bits were good too. :)
There's the other half of the story still to come. A lot of how I take this depends on exactly where they go with it. So, basically, not sold, jury still out.
Plus I might be being cranky. Never know. *shrugs*
Confidential just said Doctor Who has filmed in 17 different quarries
they're naming some of them
that is a lot of different quarries
But they are right - alien planet=quarry
looks great.
This design stuff is fun.

I mean, the whole 'I could touch you' bit? It sounded more like phone sex!
... it is possible I'm a freak ...
I was thinking though, if this was an American show, the possessed guy would go the full Lindsey and strip off, and be all pretty.
I'm not sure if this is good or bad.
