Dear god that was good.
I was all 'holy shit!' and 'oh my GOD' and... Woah! *Extremely* cool.

I was incoherent with squee. Still am.

That was very, very good.

Also?

Captain Jack is an honest to god Immortal
Holy fuck!

*And* they had him running around with a fucking sword in episode 2!
Okay, a wooden sword, but it's a good thing nobody could hear me when that happened, because I was just... the happy noises, they were embarrassing.

In non-Jack related squee...

No, actually, I'm still Jack related here...

"Won't get pregnant... Not doing that again"
:blinky: :-D

And what we know and what they know and it all being different

and

Did I mention Jack is an Immortal??!

I may die of squee here. That is so fucking cool.

Okay.

Tonight's second episode was obviously the 'we're on late at night really, lookit!' one, where they played with what they're allowed to do. Establishing range.

And establishing tone throughout. Dark. *Very* dark.
It is obvious that the guy that did the music has seen Buffy (that was the intro to 'under your spell' at one point, yesno? could be remembering wrong.)
And is also obvious they'd been watching Angel (sex demon for the second episode).

They're going right for the internal conflicts here - first ep, someone gone dark, for lovely consistent reasons.

And all the *others* had their bit of tech on the side too.

Owen, is it, the wrong kind of doctor? With the date rape spray.
I was worried that was a tiny bit played for laughs. But I know they've watched Buffy, therefore they've watched Katrina say it was rape, therefore I was less worried than I would otherwise be.

So what happens? The first ep is about how *utterly* dark misuse of tech can get them - and he's obviously further along than the woman with the book reader. Although, looked 'obviously' darker than resurrecting flies as well, and that turned out *dark*.
And the second episode he gets to be the one on the wrong end of the chemistry.

So they, the characters, are treating sex wrong, but it turns out so badly that it is pretty damn obvious they the writers are not on side with it.

I hope.

Because the other parts... So they're gay, straight, bi, all sorts. Great. But they're not privileging expressions of queer sexuality - they can be at least as messed up as straight sex. Trouble is stack that on top of a history of always being the bad thing... difficult.

But... That bit where there's the girl kissing and the guy watching the girl kissing and everyone else watching and then oh shit maybe she'll get killed... There's layers of meta in there. Like, to make it uncomfortable for the audience to sit back and enjoy in an audience way? Like... highlighting how its just a little creepy to be voyeuristic about this?

But the sex wasn't all evil. Ways of connecting. Jack might be making some really shallow and not entirely uncreepy comments - and getting *called* on it for harrassment - but then again, when he gets a kiss that's just her to him... You could see him feel it.

There's *layers* in this. They're filling it with Clues, and following up on them. There's more going on than at first appears. I get the feeling I'm going to need to rewatch this.

In fact, the radio times website reckons these are on again at about one in the morning... And right now I'm seriously considering staying up to watch.

I need some kind of recording device. Tivo, DVD recorder, I don't even know. I haven't felt the need for one for... Years, seriously. Not even watching Doctor Who.

But now I *need* to record this.

That's just... Wow. Fannish at first sight. Captain Jack swept me off my feet from his... second episode, I think. First episode left me wary but hopeful. This show? I'm already planning the convention attendance.

... The little voice at the back of my head that has watched a whole lot of TV is praying 'please don't let them mess this up now'

*sigh*

But, *wow*. Instant fan. Totally.
