... I really need to get some kind of recorder. It just means researching new-to-me tech, and that seems like a lot of bother.

You should ask the S'cubies, particularly Riff and Dev--I'm sure they could point you toward the kind of device you need, and most likely have already researched which ones are the best of their kind. Meaning minimum work for maximum info. ;)
