How did Jack find out?

The thing that is the big woah didn't see that coming of episode 1 of Torchwood
I feel vaguely like I've got a head start from all that Highlander fandom - like, I now have a bazillion storie where I can just add Jack.
ANYways
we know his first death was vs Daleks
but that one wasn't the one that told him he was Immortal. There were definite exceptional circumstances there. All the Daleks were gone when he woke up. Is kind of a Clue.
Was he the only one Shiny!Rose brought back?
If not, is there a whole game station, or even a whole planet, of Immortals right after the de-Dalek-ing of the universe?
If so... He was also the only one on the Game Station.
After all the ways back to Earth had been pulled apart to turn it into a weapon. (Yes? No? I got that impression, but I wasn't paying attention.)
One wonders how long he was stuck up there.
Was he in control of the place, or did random out of control gamebots chase him around in space?
I'm sure if I'd been reading Who fic I'd have a bunch more ideas.
I was wondering if he got all starved and suffocated up there, but given the givens, the number of people and the size of the station, seems rather unlikely.
Bunch of people are wondering if he killed himself and found out that way. Actually, a bunch of people are commenting expecting other people to write the angsty darkfic where that was how he found out.
I looked on the website and found a picture on Jack's page which I think has him stood on the edges of a pic of a fire. No context.
But I was thinking, what if he decided to go do hero stuff? Doesn't take so very long to get killed doing hero stuff.
And its a bit like Highlander, his first death tells you a lot about who he is. But unlike Highlander he doesn't have a Teacher, or the Game, or any idea what it is all about. He thinks the only guy that can tell him is the Doctor, who could be anywhere in the whole of space and time.
And Jack can't risk running into him too early, because being a time traveller he would know the whole don't touch the baby problem. So he knows they were in Cardiff and that particular time.
Was there a Hub underneath there when there was an earthquake? With that underground railway looking tunnel? Much shaking breaking.
That invisible lift must have been put in sometime after Jack visited with the Doctor.
How long has Jack been working in Torchwood? He's the guy in charge. How long has it been since the earthquake? I'm sure it said.
If he was there before then he would have had to hide to not bump into himself.
Only time he knows exactly where the Doctor is is the only time he totally can't go see him.
Same thing with the Cybermen or the big space ship - maybe its historical enough to get written down as having the Doctor in it, and he could know that way, but if it is that historical it would be also written there was a lack of Jack.
He'd have to find the Doctor by accident, because if he knows wherewhen he is then he also knows Jack isn't therethen!
*boggles*
... That would kind of suck.
ANYways, one wonders vaguely at the thought process that can, for one, find an invisible patch, and for a second, decide to turn it into a lift exit. Also, third, not think of the big hole in the ground issue. One wonders if this was a team effort or if Jack just thought it was shiny.
... I've been posting about Torchwood practically once an hour all day. I should maybe slow down a little. Think about something else for ten minutes.
Or, you know, sleep.
But I'm never very good at that.
