Fun and slightly meta: How sexuality seems to be perceived as the most important thing about a character. Specifically, "Period military is not the dress code of a straight man." combined with "No Captain Jack in the last 50 years" combined with the fact that he is actually on record in 1941.
They're on a Rift, dealing with aliens and timeslips, and yet do they see the Huge Great Clue?
