I read another chapter of Narrative Discourse. Up to page 106+.
It was about ellipsis, summary, scene, and descriptive pause, which are about the anisochronies or rhythm of the story. *pause to check if I remembered the words* *correct spelling* Isochronies is same time (like isotonic is same... sugar or whatever), where the words on the page are about the same as the story time. Speaking, sort of thing. An-isochronies are where it isn't like that.

"at any level of aesthetic elaboration at all, it is hard to imagine the existence of a narrative that wold admit of no variation in speed - and even this banal observation is somewhat important: a narrative can do without anachronies, but not without anisochronies, or, if one prefers (as one probably does), effects of rhythm."

I like that 'as one probably does'. The text notices the words are the tricksy part. That makes it easier to swallow.

"By 'speed' we mean the relationship between a temporal dimension and a spatial dimension (so many meters per second, so many seconds per meter): the speed of a narrative will be defined by the relationship between a duration (that of the story, measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years) and a length (that of the text, measured in lines and in pages)."

I like it when it is nice and straightforward.

It then wanders off and explains how his example author doesn't actually fit the boxes, which leads one to wonder why he invented the boxes, but was an interesting chapter anyways.

I'm having trouble reading though because of the nodding off.
It is amazing how much reading one doesn't get through when you keep on being a bit asleep.

I like it much better when I feel like I've had enough sleep. I realise this is rare, but its nice when it happens.

I did reading the novel (Beloved) and the notes on the novel, and I did reading the chapters from Beginning Theory (before she told us to actually, because they're the first two and beginning at the beginning seemed handy). And I read the handouts, even the one where I was reduced to writing "Balls balls bollocks balls" all over it in highlighter. Well, its not as if you have to hand the things in again. And I did the circle-box-underline exercise for the drama section, which is about seeing how novels and drama are different. Which made me think a bit about fanfic, and how I keep trying to make mine rather like the TV, but that means leaving out some things that novels can do that the TV doesn't.
I did making a bit of a glossary, though I stopped before I got half the words done.

I think its not so much that I didn't do reading this week, its that I filled the space I expected to be full of more extra reading with, er, more extra Torchwood. And therefore feel guilty.

But I definitely read all the things we were told to read, and some that were suggested, and I have a feeling of keeping up that is sort of balancing against the feeling of there being always more books than time.

Ordered more books today. When I haven't read the ones that arrived already this seems odd, but I have started on them, and read relevant chapters, and that is how you use books like that.

And I'm going to have to give the library copies back on Tuesday, unless I renew them, which I might except I know there aren't as many copies as people in the class so it seems rude to keep them.

ANYways

there could be more books later.

Or I could eat (what I just realised is the last) donut and do something recreational.

Maybe watch some downloads.

I really do enjoy these posts, even if I have nothing to say in response.
