Robin Hood
Oct. 28th, 2006 08:04 pmIs attempting some interesting things. Pity what actually makes it to the screen is such... well, I hesitate to use the words 'utter rubbish' when there is actually much worse out there, but...
The interesting: Robin quoting the Koran
Making Gisbourne actually not conflicted, and pointing out to the woman (and therefore the girls in the audience) that a violent bastard like that shouldn't get anywhere near them or the baby.
Also, Axe boy having actual useful knowledge. That always works.
The worrying: Historical accuracy. Clothes. Acting. The way this Robin somehow reminds me of an annoying little brother despite not looking like either of mine. The way Marian just makes me want to send her to university, where she'd clearly fit in and have a great time. Or, to put it another way, the way the heroes all see so much younger than me I end up with more *facepalm* and pity than interest.
I don't know if they *are* younger. Haven't looked it up. They certainly seem it though.
The bad: The action. There's emotional moments that entirely hinge on the action coming off. And it doesn't.
Roy dying? Looked utterly unnecessary.
The Hood gang getting away looked utterly implausible.
It basically takes all the emotion out of the moment.
Also, baby+fight=NO.
I can't watch that and think it any kind of fun.
Seriously. Babies do not get whooshed around and throwed off horses and stuff. Ever.
Marian getting in trouble for being outspoken works out. She's acting like a 20th century woman, she's getting treated like a medaeval one. Sort of.
This version keeps trying to do political things but ending up being so heavy handed they don't work out at all.
And I've ceased to like basically all the characters. They're just... too paper. Not really there.
And Robin is such a... I don't know. Idiot? Blah.
So, am I going to watch next week?
Well I'm in the habit now. But I don't actually want to.
