really, there need to be more Ethan episodes
ANYways, specifically I've been thinking about the reasons for Ethan's presence, given that 'the writers wanted him there' is not a valid explanation in that universe.
On 'All things philosophical' they say
'The evil magician and worshiper of chaos is back in Sunnydale to do what he loves best--bringing mayhem into Giles' life. But turning Giles into a demon isn't his only purpose for being in town; he's here to dig up information on "314". Though he tells Giles about it, it's unlikely he really wants to help Giles and the gang. It's more likely he is digging up information about it for a demon(s).'

I really wonder about the problem that site has with Ethan. What did he ever do to them? I honestly don't see how they got from what was shown to 'more likely' he was working for a demon. All we actually saw was Ethan telling Giles, so why could telling Giles not be the reason?
Well, good enough reason to be in Sunnydale, but not good enough reason to be precisely where he was when we first see him- in the crypt that Giles and the gang go to. *Waiting* in the shadows in the crypt, so he didnt follow Giles.
Giles was there to thwart the rising of the demon prince Barvain. He was also rather late. Barvain was supposed to rise at sunset, and it was already full dark. There was no trace of the demon prince. So Willow concludes that the Initiative already dealt with it. The sum total of her evidence? 'It has that "too neat" look.' In other words, the utter lack of evidence.
We never saw the Initiative anywhere near there.
Who did we see?
Yup, Ethan Rayne.
You don't think he could have... dealt with Barvain?
