Condoms, guns, and leaving out the details
Feb. 2nd, 2007 02:03 amSo I was wandering around a post metafandom linked to that gets into a discussion about condoms in the comments. I had some thoughts so I ramble here.
The other day I was reading a fic that took a happy gun porn lesson from canon and made it m/m and pushed the 'porn' aspect to a mutually satisfactory conclusion. And such is the purpose of fic, basically. But. For most of the interesting sticky parts I was entirely the wrong kind of distracted, because they hadn't put down the gun.
I mean, okay, maybe I missed the line when they did, but far as I could see, they were in states of extreme distraction while waving around a loaded weapon. And granted, one of them could have survived the likely results, but it surely wouldn't have been fun.
Similarly with condoms. If they aren't there, I find myself somewhat distracted by the risk of death.
Highlander style Immortals probably have an out. Except Duncan said once they can get sick, just not die of it. If he meant infectious disease sick then what he's actually saying is they could be carrying around generally fatal diseases from way back in history, and hello to the bad.
Vampires kind of have an out, what with the being technically dead, but then again also have issues. Depends on the exact mechanism of the particular canon. Because turning your sexual partner into a vampire on accident could be considered embarrassing. And that's even if sex don't usually lead to homicide.
Werewolves might have a magic out but more of a problem - biting is generally agreed to be the way of making new werewolves, and mouths might get carried away. Of course werewolves could also be vulnerable to all the same kind of illness as regular people, and then their lives just get extra tricky.
Porn where werewolves, vampires, or regular humans ignore the risk factors to get to the sticky parts is pretty common. But for me it tends to also have the wrong kind of distractions.
Of course I also get distracted if it's never mentioned if people closed the door or similar. Details bother me.

Date: 2007-02-02 07:53 am (UTC)... also, by this point, it's entirely possible it's more than one fic.
I've read everything Torchwood fic like, all since new year. it all sort of swirls in together rather.
Highlander I always opt for saying Duncan was being dumb. But if it wasn't just that then Kronos could really *be* Pestilence. Nasty.
