You know, I really don't like Owen
yet I keep reading fanfic that leaves me wanting to write fanfic in defense of him
... some of the stuff out there is really viciously out of character, imho.
I mean Owen is a bastard, but he's not an empty bastard. He'll put himself in harm's way to do whatever he's convinced himself is right. Yeah, I was cheering Ianto on, but yeah, Owen had a point too, and if he was serious about it being duty that's his motive? That would explain why Jack even hired him. And make it really more difficult to totally hate him.
He's a bastard on a personal level, he's out of his depth once he's out of his field, but he's not empty spite. He's actually quite complex.

... not that it wouldn't give me a happy to write him some hurt, but there's ways and ways.



Also it's more fun when everyone's being in character because then they're snarky and sparky and pushing back whenever someone pushes and it's interesting.



Now if I can only find something to like about Gwen I'll have a complete set...

Gwen does that shocked big eyed fish face like no other? XD

I have on/off love for Owen, he's a prat but he's good at it and no matter how many times he makes my eyes roll I can't help but grin a bit too. Sides, wouldn't be a good team without the troublemaker-type character who knows everyone's buttons and likes to lean on said buttons occasionally.

He's a jerk, but he's a great character and he contributes a lot. And he's light like a girl, always a plus.

Good points about Gwen... Um... Give me a minute to think about that, will you?

I'm sure she had some. At some point. Um. Oh, this maybe. While admittedly this never seems to turn out well, she does try consistently to help people and do the right thing for them (Suzie, for example). The fact that this usually winds up putting her (and others) in mortal peril is... an unhappy coincidence. (Read: all her own fault.)

Eh. Not exactly unbiased.

But yeah, I'm with you on the Owen front. People have been unusually mean to him recently, and while that usually wouldn't bother me, it's the out of character mean-ness that's getting a bit wearing. Hey. I was even nice to him in a fic. Somewhere. Which one was it...?

the thing with Gwen is I'm increasingly seeing her as someone more invested in doing the nice thing than doing the right thing. Or at least in being seen as someone who is a nice person.

I mean, the thing with Suzie... in what senses was that the right thing? Who's needs did that serve? Gwen's need to feel better about herself was pretty high on the list.

And she keeps equating her own norms and values with 'being human'. Like there's only one right way to do that.


Also, she is not kick arse. I know not every character can be, but with her combined her traits of whiny guilty empathy and freezing in crisis situations she ends up being a character I don't really want to spend much time with.


Looked at from the shiny side she does try to be all nice and empathising and understanding and stuff, she just seems terribly naive about it and a tad bit practice/preach divided.

I can never really figure on that one, so I kind of try and avoid things.

Grins. I loathed Owen through much of the first series. but the fic that turns him into a moutache twirling one dimensional villain makes me almost want to cuddle him - almost but not quite....
