Started watching season 4.
Worf joins crew, yaays.

But then, The Visitor... so let me get this straight: Jake unilaterally decides to rewind his entire lifetime and make a completely different history, changing the lives of pretty much the whole alpha quadrant in knock on consequence. Did he take a vote? Did he ask them if they wanted it all different? No. Just... whoosh, here, have a new person in the timeline.

Maybe he assumed it wouldn't make much of a difference.

But it would make a difference to everyone Jake ever met at the very least. He basically just unmarried his wife. Did he ask her first?

See in other 'verses such a change might be an alternate universe thing, but... that doesn't seem to be the case in Trek; they're always making tiny changes in history and having the whole of Starfleet disappear because of them - knock on consequences just change everything. So all that with him sending the girl away with his stories is completely irrelevant, cause she won't have been there and he won't have written them.

How come he reckons he has the right?

That's just... bad and wrong. Unmaking history. Wrong wrong wrong.

I mean in the wishverse they established that everything was made of lose and everyone was going to die and making it go boom was their last chance to make it better. Tiny bit different.

But this whole story was just about one guy who didn't write as many stories as he might have - though presumably he did valuable scientific work, even if the story doesn't seem to value it very highly at all. I get it that the point is that moping around living for ancestors is a bit odd and you have to get on with living the now, but by the end he doesn't actually do that. He spends all those years living the now and *then* decides it was all so worthless he'd rather commit suicide and unhappen it all.

That's really deeply fucked up on whole new levels.

Also a right cheat. I mean I know why DS9 needs him to go back to where he started from, but it's a cheap out. If his options were kill self and let now-younger man live or live for unknown years and risk him dying, that would be a serious dilemma. If he only lived from that moment forward, if he stayed caught up, that would be Jake not getting anything out of it personally, but doing a thing he'd know would hurt his father real bad. But no, no dilemma - he gets to undo that moment he was fixated on. Like the first episode 'you exist here' stuff. Being not-linear. And if it were only his own life that would be freaky and sad enough - really *thorough* suicide - but to decide that for everyone?

I was mad enough at Angel for rewinding everyone 24 hours, let alone all those years.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

... I have Opinions and I'm getting stompy about them.

... feel free to laugh.

Yeah, you're right. But still-- a beautifully written and acted episode, if you get past the premise. And I like the idea that some of the same things might still happen-- Nog making captain, Jake marrying and writing, all that. Maybe even being able to do it Better because he's not missing this whole piece of his life.

When I saw it, my assumption was that the accident messed with the fabric of reality and kept Jake bound to it unnaturally all those years-- that setting it right was the only way to mend the rift in the fabric of reality. Because unless things could get cut at the right time, you've got this force existing outside our dimension, intersecting it at intervals in possibly unstable ways. Once Jake died, it was possible that his father would continue to come back, and, without him there, bad things (that's a technical scientific term) would happen.

Yeah, I really overthink Trek science and canon sometimes....

Especially when I have work on my own story to do.
