Sarah Jane saves the world a lot...
Nov. 19th, 2007 06:13 pm... even if it's sometimes her puts it in danger. Almost Torchwood-y, really.
I liked that story. Twisty. Luke turning out to be a missing boy with his memories overwritten was entirely plausible, yet creepy with trying to make him too-normal. And it makes the ending where Mr Smith has his memories overwritten somewhere between poetic justice and dead creepy. I mean, if that computer virus just messed up the local crystal, that's still rewriting something's mind to keep it a useful slave. If the virus effect extended to all the Xylok on the planet, that's rewriting the minds of a species to keep humans safe. Torchwood got nothing on that. Nice one SJ.
... yeah, I'm critiquing the morals of a kids show. Sometimes it needs doing.
I did kind of like the bit at the end where she says she found a family. But I didn't exactly like it either, because that's a bit... why is the happy ending for a woman not 'career satisfation' but 'hey look family!' And with the bit in the first half about having taken the kid because she can't have kids of her own... not cool. And Maria's mum is just creepy as a portrayal of absent mother, and they're all conspiring to keep her ignorant even though it puts them all in danger, and what the hell is up with that?
... why does my cultural studies brain de squee things so often?
I liked it that Clyde wouldn't buy it, and Clyde went after his friend, and Clyde had enough brains to hack Mr Smith from inside. That was neat.
I liked it that it was Slitheen, so their choices have consequences and they have to live with the whole revenge thing. I also liked it that the little kid Slitheen was stopped by the grown up Slitheen even though it was his plan. Telling him to think things through. Because even evil revenge obsessed aliens can has moral lessons.
;-)
Was that the whole series? All done bye bye?
I liked it. There should be more. I have watched a bunch of kids TV in a half hearted way whilst waiting for SJA to start and it's so far above the rest in quality and actually making sense that it's like people ignored the whole 'for kids' side and just made stories. Win!
