Did the reading for Doctor Who class.
Finished with an interview by Ian Levine and Eric Saward slagging off JNT for, well, as far as I can tell, not listening to Ian Levine and not crediting him and not, er, employing him? And kind of wanting him to go away? Um, this is a sin because?
Oh, and they say he was casting people in Doctor Who so they'd be more famous to do panto later.
... given the ratings of the time they're talking about, I suspect that doesn't quite work out...
Also also, they think the problem with The Two Doctors is the costumes, and Attack of the Cybermen was the set design.
Er, okay...
Basically it reads like the wankiest fan kerfuffle ever, only it's from people who were actually involved with making the show. It's like the stuff you hear at conventions only once everyone is very drunk. Oh, and it assumes that stuff said while drunk is people revealing their real opinions, rather than, for instance, crap said while drunk.
And it says mean things about 7. And 5. Like they shouldn't have been the Doctor.
*glares*
I'd like to find a corner of articulate informed fandom that actually likes the 80s era Doctor Who, watched the episodes and became a fan then, or watched them much later and still finds much to like.
Oh, wait, I know that one, it's everyone I talked to before this foray into what considers itself Actual DW Fandom.
Blah. Loud pub men.
I admit the 6 era was a bit... well, wrong, in a great many ways, in a few of the ones I've seen, but 5 was fine and 7 was great and Tom Baker was not all that all the time. And it's a lot more helpful to find what did work and figure how to do more of that than it is to harp on what didn't work. I mean, the multi companion with family issues thing, that was Tegan and Turlough and Nyssa. And Rose&Mickey&Jack, and Martha. And there wasn't much about the family in the earlier era compared to the later one, but it did sometimes work in to the story, and that was interesting. Like 7 and Ace, having a companion who can actually develop and grow and stuff makes for much useful, because the Doctor is archetypal and subject to change in ways that have to stay in orbit, sort of thing. These things worked and continue to work from further away. And stunt casting? To be honest, I don't recognise any of them... which was apparently the problem at the time, but really, what I mean is, the further away we get, the more they're just another Doctor Who character, and some of them work as that plenty well. Some of them don't, but not always the ones as get complained of.
Some of it is the thing where if you're careful you can distill an episode in memory until it's got all the good bits and you don't have to concentrate on the bad ones even while watching. Er, until they're really bad. But hey, look, actual good bits! And some of them happened after 1980! And some of the bad bits happened before! Deal with it!
... oh dear, reading ranting do tend to lead to more of the same. blah.
