I found a book I like! It has women! And some of them are dating women! And it has men who fancy men. And men and women who get together too. And it's all entirely unremarkable and just part of how the world works. People can get joined as life partners any which way they want, people who want a baby have a contract to make a baby, it's all very sensible. There's stuff people are fussed about enough to make drama, but it's not those things. And women can do any work they want, and be in charge of armies, and all sorts. And again, that's just normal. Even the weirdo neighbours are weird about different things entirely. So it's a medievalesque fantasy world with magic and bards, and it has equality in gender and sexuality. See, it can be done!
The story starts shortly before the main character realises she's pregnant, and ends shortly after the baby is born, and there's a lot of stuff about babies mixed in with stuff about kingdoms and magic, and it all makes sense when it comes together in the end. Is great.
And the main character has a partner, another woman, and got pregnant off one night with very pretty man, and they just sort things out between them. The main problem is both the new parents being completely stubborn and used to being in charge. And not any sexuality or gender stuff. At all. Anywhere.
Have I mentioned this is cool? This is cool.
It's like most books are built out of sandpaper, and you can have fun in those worlds but the same usual places scrape. And then there's this world. No scraping anywhere! Yaays!
I can't remember about race though, so it might be like on the cover, which has a white person. But the cover also has patterns based on threes and someone wearing pink, which isn't very clever given that the whole thing is based on fours, like the title says, and the main bard characters wear colors with elemental correspondences. I don't know which element pink is meant to be.

The only bit I didn't like was the stupid back cover describes the state of things as reached only by page 150ish. There's plenty of choices and discoveries that lead up to page 150ish. So that's not a very good back cover.

So now I will go buy the rest of the books in the series, possibly including this book over again cause I think they got put into one cover at some point.
