I noticed a bunch of factlets concerning names.
Giles: Gilles de Rais was a serial killer long before the term was used, executed for practicing child sacrifice.
Ripper: Wikipedia gives a bunch of refs, most notably
Jack the Ripper, a serial killer in 1888
and The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, who got his name in the late 70s.
Thomas Sutcliffe was one of the initiates of Eyghon that died right before 'The Dark Age'.
I also found a page with a lot of other Sutcliffes, most of them not spooky.
There is also a Saint Giles or four, and a linguist called Herbert Giles who gave his name to the Wade-Giles Chinese transliteration system.
And Giles is of course a cartoon in the Daily Express, as is Rupert the Bear.
So not all the associations are creepy.
But it seems interesting that the associations with Giles' names are such opposites - English cartoon, saint and linguist on the one hand, serial killers on the other.
