Big Finish make original audio adventures, including Doctor Who.
They're asking new writers to pitch ideas for a one-off, 25-minute Fifth Doctor and Nyssa audio adventure, which they hope will make up one of four single-episode stories comprising a future Doctor Who release.

OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW WRITERS
(19/01/2010)
For a very limited period, Big Finish is pleased to invite prospective writers to pitch ideas for a one-off, 25-minute Fifth Doctor and Nyssa audio adventure, which we hope will make up one of four single-episode stories comprising a future /Doctor Who/ release.
Full details are contained in the briefing document, which you can download in .pdf format here: http://bigfinish.com/file-store/writers.pdf
But hurry – this window of opportunity closes on Monday 1 February!

!!!
I buy Big Finish audios, so I've listened to a bazillion of them. Some were even 5 and Nyssa. I can totally... not do this. :-( I have no bunnies. I have no Nyssa in my head. And 5 in my head is primarily interested in Turlough, which isn't terribly helpful for trying to write audios. And did I mention I have no bunnies? Which is a general state lately and really unhelpful. And, also, the one part stories aren't generally the ones that inspire me. Although Circular Time was 5 and Nyssa and a set of single stories, and I liked that rather a lot. *thinks thinks thinks*
... there's layers or reasons I 'should' try this, like my college tutor was telling me I should write some more, though she did say to get away from Doctor Who and try more places, but then that's a reason to succeed at Doctor Who. And, also, since I keep saying I want to write for Doctor Who, I'll feel a complete fraud if I don't try.
... but the bunnies are hiding. :-( :-( :-(
Maybe instead I can go around all the female writers who do DW stories and see if they'll try it. Because there's a really noticeable shortage of women writers at Big Finish.
25 minutes, 5 + Nyssa and no more than 3 original characters, no references to previous canon characters, monsters, or settings. Original. New. Possibly a bit different.
... that's even harder.
Also you'd have to keep the 2 canon people even closer in character because there's no other bits to shore things up.
In other news, RTD has gone to Fox to make more Torchwood.
This is of mixed goodness.
On the one hand, when I was reckoning RTD should fuck off to America, I didn't really want him to take his toys with him, at least not the ones I actually care about. But then after what he did I'm not sure that applies.
On the other hand, TV that gets made is generally better than invisible TV that does not get made, since there's the possibility of good bits that wouldn't otherwise exist. And US TV does a lot more episodes even in a cancelled season than a UK season would.
On the gripping hand, much as I dislike his plots and some of his isms showing, purely by the numbers RTD writes about interesting proportions of people otherwise often under represented. Or to put it another way, there's almost half his characters that are women, there's always people of color, and it's quite likely he'll write a queer character or two. Granted what he does to them is... what people were shouting about... but getting more variety on TV would be of the good.
I can't hate this news.
Especially if he sticks with showrunner and hires people who write plots that actually make sense by the end.
All that said, I'm not watching it until people I trust have reviewed it on the issues I care about. Even if actors we like are in it. Too many screw ups, not enough investment.

specified – eg 4 x 25‐minute episodes. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Established characters, settings or monsters – eg the Brigadier, Peladon, the
Cybermen. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Stories dependent on references to other Doctor Who adventures, in any media,
seen or unseen – eg the Time War. NO EXCEPTIONS!
oh dear, good point Re: CoE
Date: 2010-01-19 11:34 pm (UTC)I've been repress deny ignoring Children of Earth, so I'd forgotten how it can look, like it's fitting the show into a more US style oppressive pattern. This is a very good point. If he did this, it's really really nasty. If he didn't do this, it doesn't look good. And I'd really rather never think about it again anyway.
I'd rather be hopeful. Getting wound up is so corrosive to the energy.
