was reading a thread on what to do after teh apocalypse. a majority of people said they'd take over a mall and watch all the movies, which I suspect is an artefact of the forum they were on.

I don't know as I'd want a mall, it's not very defensible and there's nowhere to sleep. Hmmm, actually there's apartments around one of the Norwich malls, but the cinema is in the other.

My post apocalyptic plan always involved taking over the UEA. University buildings have plenty of accommodation, places to make and eat food, and cinema sized screens designed to play all sorts of media, plus a gigantic library. Their library collection is liable to be incomplete in my pop culture interests, but I could just bring my own, and go raiding around the Forum to top up. Biggest bonus, the UEA has its own power generator, and it runs on biomass. Woodchips. It'd be a bugger to find new fuel for a nuke place, but woodchips seem achievable even after the end.

Granted, I'd also need to find people who knew how to maintain and use the thing, or do a lot of studying in the cold while figuring it out, but it's a university, it seems likely it'll have all the study resources I'd need.

Defence could still be a thing, given that buildings were designed with ease of access in mind. You'd probably have to pick one building to zombie proof, if it was that kind of apocalypse. If you only had to worry about other humans, you'd just have to work on cooperation.

I went to the Peterborough Arena and stood in lots of queues and met lots of people and made sentences and got things signed and went to two talks and saw lots of things and gave smiley face stickers to all the people :-)
(well, all the ones that had an open queue and almost nobody in line, because autographs cost money and I was going to go and not give money and it seemed a bit cheeky to wait in front of anyone to do that)

I met all the people I planned to and got things signed that I brought and heard the talks I wanted to. Fun!

... I don't think I'm doing that again.
Many people. Many. Lots.
And the noise. Read more... )

I didn't talk every single person in the whole hall but it sure felt like it by the end of the day.

Also my employee has a camera and is all ooooooh famous people! ooooooh costumes! So she was having fun too.

So the day was a success, but quite difficult, so I think I'll be sticking to the sort of events in hotels with parties from now on.
