BFA DW In the Night
Jul. 6th, 2024 08:03 pm5, Tegan, and Nyssa, in two stories, Pursuit of the Nightjar and Resistor.
Pursuit of the Nightjar was beautiful, about stories and the power of stories and time travel inspired by stories. The Doctor had heard this story when he was much much younger and I love hearing him get all giddy and young about it, and then getting knocked around by the reality of it. Poetic, the story properly sets up its symbols. Two main speaking characters outside the TARDIS team plus one beepy robot. so they have plenty of space to breathe and develop. It stays very vague about the war that is the backdrop, so it stays focused on the mercy mission. That works for the story because it's like this journey is the only thing to exist, and since the ships have spent years chasing through the dark that fits. I really loved this one.
... at least, I loved the first few parts, but when I listened a few days ago I paused the story and realised I was in several pain, because my headache had snuck up on me. After that I wanted to love it and was pretty sure it was still very good, but I was also distracted. Still, I'd give it a 5/5, everyone got stuff to do and emotions to have and it was very involving.
Resistor was only okay, which sort of suffered by the comparison. It's an Earth based adventure that seemed vividly drawn and convincing and not English, so that's good. The characters feel like they belong in their time and place. There's a proper alien dilemma, sorted out neatly. But it didnt quite grab me. I'll give it another chance later, it might feel different next to a different story.
Good set.
