I dreamed I was pregnant and very ill, and the treatment would hurt the baby, like with Cordelia and Miles Vorkosigan. But there was more time, and there was also Loki. Loki is a shapeshifter, and a god, and can do useful clever things, like in this case take over as the mother while the baby got done growing. The part where that made Loki one third of the parents for this kid did not, in the dream, seem the most immediate problem. (Having just read a page about Loki and what happened to all his kids, including being killed so their guts can be used to tie him up, it seems rather a lot more of a problem.)

So then I got well and the dream carried on with epic heroics and, hmmm, actually, interior decorating and househunting, cause there was a bit where my mum had a house she wasn't quite happy with but outside there was a square that was on three sides made of comic shops, game shops, book shops, and other varieties of geek bait, while the fourth was this giant and epic museum that turns up in my dreams sometimes and kind of promises to be all the best museums ever. So I got my mum to promise that if she moved out, I could move in. Location epic win.

So then we were defending the castle, normal day, and Loki turns up, looking like a bloke, and takes me to introduce me to the baby. Baby was really really cute and also coffee and cream colors with baby blue eyes and a clean baby smell and, also, kind of really extra stretchy. Like, baby backside slipping slowly off my arm resulted in baby sitting on the sofa at one end and in my arms at the other. When baby was interested in stuff it kept turning its head around and around until they ending up like a cartoon owl with neck in a twist. So the usual worries about dropping the baby were somewhat compounded by the thought they might slide out and get in a knot somewhere. Thanks, Loki. But on the plus side: alive! Big win!

So then there was going to be politics with trying to introduce this baby and explain the connection to hereditary power without mentioning Loki or that Loki had been a woman. He never hears the end of it when that happens. Plus there was needing to both find and inform the kid's father, who was not the guy who might have reasonably assumed he'd be father of any babies, as could be plainly seen from the not being white. Kid didn't just have two daddies, had two and a stepdad who didn't know yet and two moms, and they were only 4 people. So, I hugged the baby real tight and made magic so blood called to blood and his father would turn up again from wherever he'd got to. And then I went to wash, cause kid needed changing and I'm not great at touching.

Then the castle came under attack from bioweapons and we had to scorch every surface with a really big cool fire spell. But then the spellcasters started sneezing, so not only were people ill already, they kept on blowing out the windows with air magic. We needed to quarantine the place fast.

Dream ended with a nice black man and his new nice black wife putting all their stuff in a cart and staring across the distance at the great big castle all rosy in the sunset, about to set off to follow the calling spell. And coughing. Ill with the same (probably magical) infection.

So that was kind of depressing.
Also, stretchy baby is pretty disturbing.
It hadn't started stretching across the room like Mr Fantastic but I guess baby eyes wouldn't be seeing that far yet anyway. Was going to make it difficult to childproof the place. Though I guess it's a big heritage castle full of fancy art, childproofing was going to be an issue anyway.

I keep saying 'it' about the baby. Kid needs a pronoun. I think when the kid is so notably child of a shapeshifting gender optional god it is probably not so simple as looking. It is still not the appropriate pronoun though.

Also I was reading some Norse stories and Loki doesn't actually come out looking worst in those. I mean the trick with the mistletoe was nasty, though the gods having the hobby of let's try and hurt Balder isn't exactly nice even if they know he'll be okay. But the other could also be jerks. And they're totally nasty to his kids.

Also the thing with being a mother probably wouldn't be so mockable on its own, it's just the part where the father was a horse and Loki turned into a mare so his/her sexual allure could help the gods cheat on a bet that just tangles the whole thing up. How long would the other gods be making horse jokes? Or possibly the same horse joke, a lot, if try-and-shoot-Balder is a persistently funny game. And then Loki's kid is a horse, albeit a really good horse. Still not someone you could have a chat with, just a horse that could ride into the land of the dead to visit his half sister Hel. Mostly Odin rode him. As careers for your kids go, that's probably not a first choice.

There was also a spin of dream where the baby was King Arthur's, who was secretly not technically King, because the sword in the stone didn't check the equipment first. They'd spent months hiding that the King was getting big, and now the baby was born and was black they were going to say Gwen was the mother, cause she was the right colour (this being cast from Merlin on the BBC) and figured Lancelot would understand. It's an answer to the Lancelot question I had not previously thought of. Probably Gwen's brother would be father then. King Arthur would go out carousing in disguise, but the disguise mostly involved leaving stuff undisguised, so it was a very realistic disguise. And nobody would guess, because you don't tend to go around guessing which barmaid is secretly the King. And the parts where Arthur saved the kingdom from anarchy and did the round table bit and a golden age would all stay the same. Under armour it's all much of a muchness anyway.
