Five out of six aliens
Feb. 2nd, 2012 08:46 pmI have names for bunches of people now. My aliens are UVWXYZ which is a bit ridiculous, but at least narrows down what I'm looking at.
Uakari
Whin
Yorath
Xanthe
Zizel
Uakari is name for a sort of red face monkey. She's the tech.
V I still don't have. I decided it should be long, just for variety. But then they'll only call her something short anyway. I was thinking of a random generator name but they just sound so nothingy.
Whin is a word for gorse. He's the botanist. Nickname Darwin. Full name something silly that makes him ROFL when people try and pronounce it. Whin Houyhnhnm Hin!inm or something.
Yorath is from the Welsh for handsome lord.
Xanthe is greek for yellow.
Zizel is a name for a sort of squirrel.
I was trying to pick names that don't sound like they're from the same language. Because alien planets are large too, and if they have such a thing as a babelfish or a linguist they have a need for lots of translating.
The team from Earth are: One surveyor who likes megaliths, one theologian and folklorist, one ex army signals tech, one ex army captain who blows things up, one ex army medic, and an astrophysicist.
The team from the other world are: One cryptozoologist, one botanist, one linguist, one beastmaster and guard, and a tourist or pilgrim.
And then they meet the city.
Between them they've got a lot of approaches.
That looks like a lot of characters but they get introduced gradually and they're 100% of the people in the early stories, no random people helping their investigations or anything, just the dozen people now living in the city. I probably need a few more people in the city VR. The teams have to get to know each other and figure out how to survive the new environment all at once.
... It's probably too many characters. Making them up is all I'm doing with them so far anyways. :eyeroll:

Date: 2012-02-02 11:19 pm (UTC)I was poking around for V starting names, but couldn't find anything particularly long.
Though you should totally name someone Anamika. It's a girl name meaning "This person's destiny is not set by their name."

Date: 2012-02-02 11:47 pm (UTC)Väinämöinen was a wise old magician in Finnish mythology. He was a hero in an epic. It has a lot of bits in that don't type easy even if I wanted to figure out how to tweak the gender.
Verethragna is a Zoroastrian god, "victory over resistance".
Visvaldis is a Latvian masculine name meaning rules all.
Vasundhara is a girl name and means "possessor of wealth" in Sanskrit, used to refer to the earth.
All names from behindthename.com , where I spend entirely too much time.
There's also Viatrix, which is an early form of Beatrix and means voyager or traveller.
But then I might as well call her Voyager.
And then I'd want to give her a personal name, which can be from anywhere in the alphabet, and I'm back stuck for names with all the names ever to choose from.
