beccaelizabethI'm watching the Syfy show Defiance on DVD. So far I've got through two discs, the long first episode and three short ones. I'm still not sure what I think of it. Something is bugging me but it might be unrelated to the TV. So I'll keep watching. Actually, given that I watched a season of Grimm solely because I'd bought the DVDs, I guess I'll watch even really bad stuff if I happen to own it already. But there's some interesting bits too maybe.
I did figure out one thing that bugs me: it's another one where America gets invaded and is all woeful and put upon. Why tell that story? How about the one where the humans have huge amounts of power and go out there and drop on to other people's planets? Somewhat more to the point, I'd think.
Except even the biggie franchise of that premis turned into being all about Earth's horrible woe and revenge attacks. Blergh.
Defiance has lots of strands of story and lots of interesting characters. I might like it. I don't know yet.
the thing where there's a game to play that is supposed to effect the TV story seems weird. I heard about it at a convention where some writers for other media/shows were all, like, *facepalm*, because if you give gamers a lever they will use it, and any GM knows they will not use it the way you think. So I kind of want to know what's up with that. It doesn't seem very plausible.
But on the other hand it does seem kind of awesome, in GM mode, to think it up. The possibilities rock.
... but then, humans.
Also today I phoned mum to see if she had opinions on vacuum cleaners, and her opinion was basically that I should spend at least £80 on one or it would blow up. The one I have now was very cheap and didn't blow up, just stopped. But she talked me out of the cheapest ones that are like £25, so I was going to spend £50, but the website wanted me to set up an account and tell them stuff I don't got like mobile phone numbers and give it a password and why will it not shut up and take my money why it just needs a delivery address grrr arrrgh. so I gave up and will try going to a shop.
I'm not very good at conversations with mum. I mention stuff I've been reading on the web and in the news and stuff and it ends up being all frowns and sad face. I attempt cheerful but then there's talking.
So then I talked to mum for a bunch of time, including about meditation and buddhism and how frustrating the silly out of order mindfulness CD is and how aggravating it is that searching for mindfulness finds this guy and not like the non branded version. So when we finished the conversation I said I was going to go meditate.
Twelve minutes later mum phoned me back. And started 'sorry if I'm interrupting your meditation'.
... if she can think of that why was she on the phone in that minute and not a different minute?
well because she thought an Important Thing to phone about, from her point of view, so okays.
but I did pretty good with the meditating and just went back to it for the rest of the hour instead of mouse wheeling about grr arrrgh stuff.
Meditation is good and relaxing and a bit trippy, especially trying to un-meditate swiftly and without a few minutes to have a sit and a drink and suchlike. It's like being dizzy but in the thinking parts.
that was a pretty good day.
