Went and bought books
Jan. 1st, 2014 05:53 pmI decided this morning I wanted the other two books in the series sufficiently to leave the house, but then it was New Year and the shop didn't open until 11. So I ended up watching an episode of Atlantis and getting all impatient. But then I went to the supermarket and back. For two books.
:-)
I started reading as soon as I got back, so now I have read Catching Fire.
... Katniss is an odd point of view character. She don't know much about much, and she mostly just sort of staggers between bad things trying to survive. It's very noir private eye actually, makes me want to dig out the old theory essay, I think it was something about demonstrating how life is random and rotten and only to be endured. It does enhance the story of how her world is so constrained and constructed and controlled.
But I don't think I like it. I think I'd rather be reading about someone making smart plans and good alliances and doing useful things. This way suits the story better, but it is not a fun story.
On the other hand, I want to read what happens next. Which is handy because I already bought the next book. So the writing is clearly doing what it set out to do, I just think after this I'm going to have to read about one of my cunning spaceship captains for a while instead. Unless the last book sorts it all out really well. Which it very well might.
So I was brave and mighty and read a good book. Pretty good start to the year. :-)
