and another thing
Feb. 23rd, 2015 08:03 pm(I tried a whole biting my tongue plan this weekend and stuff wants saying)
To the guy who was going on about how Political Correctness is just like 1984 and Freedom of Speech is going to be a thing of the past: No.
Just, no.
... okay, the longer version:
It is not 19 flipping 84.
Not least because it is not the government mandating changes in everyone's language. The government does sometimes choose to use better language in its own pronouncements, but they don't ban the words when other people use them. Even the BBC.
Nobody is interfering with your freedom of speech. You can still say exactly what you want to say, as often as you want to say it. But when you say it, some people will point out you have in fact been an arse, or to put it differently, have been rude and hurtful. And it is up to you whether or not you take on board their criticism. You still have all the words available to be as politically incorrect as you please. But you will now be aware you are choosing to hurt people every time you use those words.
Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences.
We can all use our words, it's just kind of important to know what the words mean and do when we use them.
