It has been pointed out that there are Many TV shows starring actual adults
and I have just been watching the wrong shelf.

It's a basic Why Is Story Not About Me sulk, really, and if I'm the one choosing which stories I kind of know why.

Teenagers really weren't a social phenomenon until the 1950s, so if you watch older movies they're almost always going to be about grownups. I mean, Scarlett O'Hara is about as problematic a heroine as they come, but she sure wasn't worrying about whether she was going to make the cheerleading squad.

I think I can think of movies that have "adult with some disability, explicit or implicit/subtext, who tries to get a handle on life", but I can't much think of tv shows, let alone sf/f shows... Not to say they don't exist, just that it's very specific and I can't think of anything right now.
