I think I like the character beats, but the plot logic... even by superhero standards, surely thy shouldn't have been the only ones dealing with any of that?

I mean they say it's the most secure heavily guarded building ever and then... have less security than the average fan convention. Really, it doesn't seem like a 'state dinner' is the kind of place two strangers are left to disarm a bomb alone.

Speaking of, on the one hand, I kind of like the arc of 'be more like Snart' 'you keep reminding me of my dead friend' 'don't be him, be you' 'You're Ray Palmer, you can science your way out of anything'.
But I want to punch Ray for just wearing Len's jacket like it's no thing.
And the plot logic had to ignore Mick's skills again. Mick set up a bomb in his first appearance. Things that boom and burn are his gig. And being older than Ray he'd be more likely to have used 'obsolete' tech. So Mick being there for moral support? Yeah, but, no.
Makes it seem like him sitting there having a donut instead of running away or something is just... more like a mental health problem than a team thing.
Because he should have been able to do something.

The whole getting stuck trying to say feelings and punching out the radio for 'you just died in my arms tonight' plus the... hesitation in describing Len as his dead friend, in an episode where they also had a gay guy? Seems like the subtext is not very sub.

Mick saying Ray needs to get in touch with his anger and pain to be more like Len... break our hearts how many ways?

The whole thing is just... everyone needs a hug whilst also needing a slap? Like Mick fixed it pretty fast, but his initial advice was bad. But he's hurting and it's :(

Todd having someone to go home to was :-)
along with 'changed mostly for the better'

Ray is... his crisis of confidence is consistent with earlier characterisation, but seriously? He's rich, he's a super genius, he has friends and team, he has a healthy body and a lot of training and experience by now, how is he coming up short on any metric? he's walked away from all that before and decided to stay dead because people didn't miss him enough and he felt like his life didn't mean enough. and you can call it a mental health problem, but it's just so hard to sympathise with 'my life has everything but I just don't feel good about it'

yes I know he lost his fiancee but again, he's the one who said he's not getting her back because Rules. The whole show is working to show us the why of the rules. but it's hard to feel.

Mostly I feel like they switched the basis and goal. Like, the crew and audience signed on for "let's beat the bad guy and save people" but now it's more "lets make sure no one ever does because time travel".

I mean repeatedly armed attacks on and explosions in the White House could, one suspects, knock diplomacy a little off track, but that doesn't matter because superhero. But saving one life would? The whole cause and effect is wonky.

and if saving a life would because of impact on history, crew your timeships with ghosts, ffs. I've been saying it for years now. if the rules is you need to take people out of time with minimum impact, lo, dead people are the answer.

But then Sara isn't thinking around corners at all, let alone fourth dimensionally.

I wanted to slap her so hard.

Tell the bad guy his exact plan, where it goes wrong, and then leave him to think about it for thirty years? How would that ever not knock everything for six?

... not that slapping people is an effective debate tactic, but gah, what idiocy!

... plausible idiocy though, seeing as I'm mad at her and not the writers.

Martin and his younger self is also... interesting, and his assumption the differences are simply ripples and dominos seems likely but unproven. Giving his younger self a talking to... who hasn't dreamed of that? Though I find myself depressed about my ability to do anything about it... Still, there's always something. So I'm looking forward to the fallout. Character stuff will abound.

So yeah, Amaya inconsistent, Martin and Sara and Ray self centered and emotion driven in drama ways, Mick needing a hug in his inimitable fashion, plenty good chewy character stuff.

I'm just a bit :eyeroll: how it's meant to fit together with their being anyone else at all who could be doing a thing.
