Haven't slept much, they're doing things to the floors and it is much banging.

Dreamt I was trapped in a house with Captain Cold, and we had to call in the Rogues to help, but Mick brought the Legends too. And Mick was from After, so he was all angst. Like, he was pretty sure he was going to save Len that day, but he'd have to let him go again too, and this is not his best day.

Also, the bad thing? It was frozen deep cold when Mick got there, but somehow still moving. So he hit it with the heat gun, and when it thawed? Len!

Mimic things are the worst.

So we were in this house, lots of statues and shiny stuff, looked like the rich stuff house. But everything was doubled. Mirrored, exactly and precisely. Bilaterally symmetrical house, windows, doors, landings you could see the inner lobby from. Two of everything, down to the rugs.

I didn't come up with a reason for the mimic thing, maybe all the backwards versions get possessed or something.

But there's plenty of meaty plot in there.

So after that season I'm a bit borderline on if I like the show. I like Mick, and how much meaty emotional story he's been getting. But I don't like what happened to his partner, or how they mess us around with all the signs and signifiers of a love relationship, the ring, the saying love you, and then just hand us that as an ending. They retcon his whole relationship to be something we're meant to cheer him walking away from. I don't see why they want to do that. The end of last season gave us a problem of Mick being sad, but making like he shouldn't have been is not a solution I'm willing to swallow.

Still, Mick says Leonard becomes a better man. He still believes in them. After all that.

Feels.

The first season had a pretty good plot made of closed time loop.

... although logically the Hawks could never have killed Savage in their own past without making themselves not be born, but, they didn't, so not noticing that was on Rip and part of the cunning predestination plan.


But the whole first season was about breaking away from predestination and building better lives.

Second season is about keeping everything the same while team evil tries to save their families and their own lives.

Why were we meant to change sides on that issue?

So I am not sold on this show.




And the entire ethics of it depend on laws of time that just don't stay still to figure out.


But they do find new and interesting ways to break them, so hey, that could be interesting.

I am looking forwards to the fanfic far more than to the next season.

This whole celebrity history thing is not my speed. This week they explain that Tolkien was secretly mostly quoting? There's a lot about the whole setup that didn't work for me.

On the other hand: Mick and Len.
Finally, more or less actual Len.
... the more or less being the frustrating part.

Ugh.
I mean, don't get me wrong, the idea that the work of one man can inspire a generation to great heroism has obvious emotional appeal, I'm a writer and I get exactly why they wanted to write this.
But it's just... ugh.
The way they did it has too much of the self congratulatory back pat and I got bored.

The only bits of this I listened to with actual sound were the Mick story.

... many of us have been wanting to hear Mick say "I love you" to Len but not like this.

It's frustrating me how the story is giving us all these heartbreaking pieces but seems to think it makes Mick frightening and funny. I just... I don't get what they think they're doing. And I don't like it.



Everyone's getting a lot of character stuff and emotional mileage, Sara and leadership and trying to live up to the past, Martin and his arrogant judgemental self making changes, Ray and Nate losing and finding themselves repeatedly, but Mick's is the most emotionally charged.

... and I know how it ends, and am not looking forwards to it.

*sigh*

I think I like the character beats, but the plot logic... even by superhero standards, surely thy shouldn't have been the only ones dealing with any of that?

So yeah, Amaya inconsistent, Martin and Sara and Ray self centered and emotion driven in drama ways, Mick needing a hug in his inimitable fashion, plenty good chewy character stuff.


I'm just a bit :eyeroll: how it's meant to fit together with their being anyone else at all who could be doing a thing.

Some characters you say OTP because there's only one relationship they'd realistically in canon in character want to end up in
and others you just... you have all these feels, and if they're not with their OTP all the feels are sad.

Like, I can clearly see in assorted canon that Captain Cold at least talks like he wants to date a lot of people
(for varying values of date)
but after Legends of Tomorrow I just can't poly or multiship Mick and Len.

Thirty years as partners.
However messed up they were
you've kind of got to wish for that specific happy ever after.




... and instead canon gave us multiple angles on til death do us part...
... canon has weird ideas of satisfying storytelling.



These feels brought to you by:
All the Coldwave writers are busy together rewriting the season
and all the Mick or Len fic is some other ship
and it gives me a sad
even if it's quite well written and the characters are kind of happy.



Of course the other thing is that
writers who think other ships are obvious
just have very different ideas of how humans work
and what happily ever after even looks like
and who would have to change how much to get there.

I understand wanting to work through characters opposing philosophies and assorted issues to get to a happy ending
but
Rogues be rogues, right?

I mean, writing Robin Hood settling down into the grey grip of bureaucracy seems passing strange no matter who he's shagging.

... Captain Cold is no Robin Hood, but that is a popular angle to take on the rehabilitation of rogues.

Also there's pointing out the basically law breaking nature of vigilantes
and asking where heroes get the right to call themselves heroes
when they mostly go around punching people really hard and putting them in solitary in private prisons.

There's middle ground to be found whenever they get to punch people they all hate together
... though the whole let's fix the legal system approach has its own distinct appeals.



I guess the specific happily I'm looking for is where they don't have to fix their mental illness or stop being who they are, they just have someone who gets them and digs them anyway.

... the part with the temperature themed weapons gets fixed in canon by having Len promise not to kill people any more, on behalf of himself and his rogues, so it feels a bit too easy to ignore. Like exciting heist adventures rather than that crunchy pieces noise the cold gun can lead to, or the burnt police officers the heat gun left behind. All in the past! Ish.

And the version of Mick and Len I'm interested in reading don't ignore their mental health problems or let each other spiral, they help and support. ... just it's going to lead to burning and thieving. ... which is not optimal.



... sometimes it would be a lot less embarrassing to not be a villain fan.

I like to think it's because villains take more thinking on because heroes are either already doing what you want them to or clearly in need of balancing out by particular villains.

But sometimes it's just because those are the characters my age or older, and actually pretty.




... still, a lifetime admiration for the Doctor, Chaotic Good who stole a blue box and ran away, that sets some patterns...





I know if I can't find the fic I want I should write it myself.

Bunnies and plot present, words... *sigh*

But maybe someday.
