Crispy Master is not an incarnation where I ever sat around wondering what else happened to him. Gathering a set of sixteen year olds and getting them to call him daddy while plotting to use their bodies for his own survival is not an answer I'll ever particularly feel the need to listen to again. Different sort of creepy.
Story had a lot of good bits about being led into evil, several different sets of people hunting the Master for various reasons that all make the Doctor's usual refusal to end him look good by comparison, and a lot of people going to bad ends. Characters were distinct and made sense, even though there's many of them, and you could feel for them.
Just a lot of what I felt was sort of gyargh *shudder*
... I suspect the whole thing done with any other Master would feel rather different. Dominating minds is extra creepy when its teenagers whose desires are so everyday and small. Crispy has no attractive mask and you can't even slightly think that teenagers who just want to pass maths actually deserve how dark things get. So, I'm disliking the story for making me see it. Oops.
There were also two characters in the story with extensive facial burns, and the main difference was the other guy looked in the mirror, saw only his victims, and felt only remorse. Big contrast to the Master grabbing any excuse and happily killing anyone.
But as far as I noticed the other scarred guy didnt get to speak for himself. He's catalyst and pity, not person protagonist, so while it's slightly better than the ugly equals evil that story can sink into, it's got a ways to go.
Story has layers, and proper characters, but I didnt actually enjoy it. Ymmv.
