I think I liked this one. Six, Constance, and surprise Flip. I'm not a big fan of Constance or Flip alone, but they're such a contrast it's more amusing. And this story juxtaposes Flip on her wedding day, newlywed with doubts, with Constance being informed of her husbands death... only to find out he's actually married another woman. Feelings stuff everywhere! Proper characters in the middle of the scifi is always best.
The setting is postwar, so the cold war is kicking off, and the aliens are muddled in because one young man doesnt want to continue the war he was born into. For a bit in the middle I thought it was going with literal battle of the sexes, since the soldier was talking about specialising so much they look different, and the enemy voices were ladies, but it did not go there. ... I might have liked it if it had because the whole thing where different experiences lead to big break up would have worked.
Constance having a go at her husband for not talking and just giving up mixed nicely with a peace talks ending. Flip setting out the runaway's options vis a vis duty and expectation was also a nice moment. The people stuff worked, so this story worked.
Cleaner Day also worked, and the schedule came through so next week shall have a Cleaner Day too, which is always fiddly around the holidays.
But I've been feeling like I've forgotten something and I think I forgot to eat. It is generally recommended to have had breakfast and even lunch by 4pm...
