Red Cliff, John Woo
Jan. 20th, 2018 10:46 pmEvery time I watch this I remember I keep meaning to buy the proper length edition, but no, I still only have the short one. Which is over two hours long, but I still only felt the bits that seemed hurried, it never seemed slow.
I know logically the violence in massive armies clashing is worse than the one I just watched with the two guys in a living room, but the feeling is so different. It's all heroics and cleverness, and saving the baby and the lady. And then it dumps you out looking at a plain of bodies after the battle. But then there's another scene for an ending, with actual rainbows and sunlight, and the two smartest guys pretty much acknowledging they're going to fight later but they really like each other now. So tonally it's a whole other experience.
... the one that makes you hate violence is probably more moral, really, but the one where they set the whole fleet on fire is somehow more fun. it's a wonder humans got this far...
But I really do love when he goes out to fetch arrows. That was hilarious.
I should read the book. Might take quite a lot of reading, but classics is interesting.
still a very good movie.
