Captain America

I watched the first Captain America movie.
I forget how much of these is action sequence, when I'm not watching.
I watch some very action heavy genres and yet when I remember them I'm there for the friends and romance and angst.
Hence fanfic.
But after reading fanfic for so many years, the movies just seem thin.
Good, for what they are, but what they are is the short story that started it.
Fandom has done so many interesting things with it since then.
But the movie just hits the beats of a solid story, blows things up, has people being Best Friends as demonstrated in a couple of minutes, has a romance for the ages as demonstrated in one kiss.
Don't get me wrong, I like it, it's just we've been elaborating on these parts for a real long time now.
So.
Thin.
It's weirdly meta too, with the song and dance, the movies in the movie, the newsreels. It's showing us Captain America, the significance of him in the 'verse, and then making those sections look flat with the Real Story. And it just holds up a mirror, why are they making and why are we watching?
Would be nice if it were nothing to do with politics.
But, nothing can be.
So, whoosh, booms, but also a quick tour of propaganda and what the MCU thinks Steve should be.
Which makes a better springboard than a thing in itself.
Interesting.
Also weird, that guy is not Darhk. Distracting.
Howard is funny silly and a little bit hero here. But this is after we've seen what Tony saw of him, after Iron Man 2 and the drunk video. ... and a different actor, which introduces ambiguity where there's almost certainly meant to be none. But. This is where the other guy started. That has some layers. But those start getting unpacked in Agent Carter.
... Agent Carter should have made Director Carter. *sigh*
I like her here but she needs told off for shooting at Steve. That was stupid, even in a movie world. So she's great, but too much right there.
And we only see her try things that Steve succeeds at, or sit in back to be kissed while others drive, which is... less great.
But there's good potential, so, that's nice.
... I like fanfic better. It somehow makes it weird to go back and find the movies as they always were. Whoosh boom hero sad bit setup for sequel.
... but fun for what it is.

THIS
if I could have these movies minus the action, car chases, things go boom, and people die. Just minus all the boring repetitive nonsense. They wouldn't have to be four hours long then, too, so win-win. Or you could do four hours of more interesting stuff like those very characters and those very actors getting to do things except exploding shit and punching.
...One gets the feeling that action movies and superhero movies are not aimed at one, does one not?
