Captain Jack Harkness and Jo Grant investigate the mine where Jo left the Doctor.

This was a good one.

We hear more about what Jo did since she left and what her marriage is like, and the two of them talk about the Doctor. Well, are mean to each other via what would the Doctor think. It's clearly written by someone who cares about the characters.

Also, it's really really trying to put you off vegan meat substitutes.
How? The company that took over the Nuthatch and its vegan food productipn is called
The Proper Grub Company.

It is not trying to be subtle.

Trigger warnings for whatever the variant of cannibalism is when one species agrees another species can eat its unwanted members. Some of the grubs are sapient enough to run a company. The food ones... probably aren't. Maybe.

And rhe Torchwood solutoon to the whole situation is to kind of shrug and decide the food and economic benefits are worth it?

I'm squicked by insect protein, but I'm absolutely appalled at eating thinking creatures
even if we knew if they vollunteered
they were bred for it.

So that's some lovely meaty food for thought.

Also, between Countrycide and Meat, Torchwood do have its preoccupations.

Also in this story is the return of a classic series AI, which is interesting next to the Torchwood One Machines set. It's that AI are inherently scarier now. Because if they get on the internet we're stuffed.

But this AI turns out to be suicidal, which is creepy. And Jack helps it... give up emotion and sentience and just keep doing work, which is creepier really. And it's all mixed in with Jack and his ambivalence to immortality, and Jo being older and having a perspective on how time flies. She was in town for a funeral and has a lovely line about how eventually the social meetings are one of a few sorts, ice cream, champagne, grandchildren, or wearing black. Her husband is away working, and they gave up their business, and have been travelling, and it's all... layered and interesting.

And Welsh again. No coal, only tourists.

and there's a lot of talking about the environment.

It's just got a lot of elements that combine well to make a story that'll reward free relistens and does a lot with its themes
while trying to creep you out about giant insects and poorly labelled food.

Though if something is chemically and texturally identical to fungus I don't see how it's a grub anymore. Eh, DW does weirder on the regular. Squirmy fungal grubs aren't that weird.

Jack glowing green and transferring immunity with kisses, that's weird and fun.

I can recommend this one. Lots of grubs, bit of a tw for suicide if you think of AI as alive, but getting into the characters and doing good story.
