Or if you read something where you really like everything about it except the basic premise. Like the ficathon story with the odd pairing or whatever. Especially when the author doesnt believe in it either. You can get technically excellent stories with good use of language and everything but just all hollow.
I've also discovered I need to know a why before I'm interested in the hotness. I mean two hot guys doing interesting things to each other, should be hot. But tends to leave me cold unless its a pairing I think is so obvious no background is needed, or the story explains how it happens. Or sometimes leaves me cold anyway because the explain seems wrong to me and empties out the other good bits.
(I have theoretically been writing tonight. Managed more than a page of notes trying to describe a setting that got fuzzier and fuzzier as it went along. Therefore I'm in a desperate to have other thoughts mood)
