DW BFA No Man's Land

beccaelizabethAnother historical with only humans involved, this time in world war one.
Poor Hex isn't half being dragged through it.
He goes straight from one war to another, he gets blown up as soon as he gets there, and that's still not the worst part of the next few days.
The Doctor, Ace and Hex investigate a murder that hasnt happened yet, and find a 'hospital' that is doing some highly unethical research.
It's about turning men into killing machines, and Hex makes the explicit comparison to cybermen, but all they're using is psychological conditioning. Which Hex is put through. So now he has even more reasons to be Angry.
At one point in this he realises he left home with nothing, without even a photo of his family. Ace says they could go back, but the TARDIS would probably miss.
Ace seems to be a bit good at Moving On. Lost track of her family. Been through the wars.
Also there was a comparison where Ace studied the war poets but Hex studied the history. Ace is always referring back to school, but Hex, fully trained nurse, must have been to rather more school than her. It's like school is still Ace's baseline for normal or reference point for life on Earth.
This time of listening I think I worry about Ace. She's good to listen to but there seems to be a theme of Consequences, Psychological. A real Ace would need a holiday and an After The War to aim for.
Also being a bit too good at being time travellers made them a bit not good at spotting what was going on.
The plot was grim and engaging. Action, but in that war movie way where its not adventure or excitement, just death. And the creeping horror of a place of alleged healing doing all That to them. Characters with personalities having really terrible things happen to them. And having to live with it, after.
It's a good audio but not a fun one.
