Doctor Who Signs and Wonders
Oct. 10th, 2023 09:30 pmToday I listened to the last (for Hex) two 7 Ace and Hector-Hex adventures.
I think I listened them before because they have a star rating on LibraryThing already. But I didnt remember them at all. I listened the Ace and Hex adventures and then sort of stalled because So Many Bad Things happen to Hex. I remembered Afterlife but not the ones after it. So I didnt know if he would be okay, and I only wanted him to be okay.
Good news earlier me: there is, somehow, a happy ending.
:-D
It's a bit difficult to imagine at several points, including right after Hex dies, which for most people is a fairly permanent situation, or right after Afterlife, which was a very difficult one. But somehow it ends up okay.
I liked the stories with Hector, trying to be seen and having to live with people looking right past him, having his false memories unravel without any true ones to replace them. I liked them as in those are strong story elements, but they were also where I got stuck because it was all looking bleak. But Mask of Tragedy managed to be exciting and fun and silly and make an important point all at once, so that was good.
Signs and Wonders did a lot of running around and wrapped up the whole Elder Gods thing, but now I'm trying to write it down a lot of it felt like the audio equivalent of running down corridors. Like yes there was lots of screaming and the plot kept moving but it felt like the important bit was only the ending. There was other stuff too, like in DW's 2020s we can apparently look forwards to the armed forces being available for private hire, but the ending had a lot work out very quickly.
I suppose that's why I forgot it? It wasnt bad, but, the bit I'd want to keep is, Hex got his happy ending.
And I liked that the TARDIS hopped forwards a bunch of years to show us he keeps being okay.
Unlikely based on past performance, but well earned.
... the bit where Hex says the thing with self sacrifice is it's easier the second time made me want to pick him up by the scruff and drop him in therapy, but a happy family life will apparently do.
I was happy with the stories and felt like it was all plenty fitting for the characters, including the bit where Ace picks helping the Doctor over helping Hex. It just makes it clear in one why things shake out the way they did here.
Good audios, good endings for the characters, though I've got some more with the same characters in that presumably fit in somewhere before all this (probabky, shall see).
Hope I remember them this time.
