beccaelizabethYaay! MY JL is back! Beetle and Booster and Captain Atom and Fire and Elongated Man and L-Ron.
Except I'm on page one and already theres yuwhats. Like, Wasn't L-Ron Despero a minute ago? And Cap had found out he wasnt actually the original guy as got experimented on but actually a quantum clone and was going to call himself something different. I think. Yeah, was going to go with the Cameron Scott secret identity. But hey, there's been a bunch of issues of stuff since the last one I saw (Extreme Justice) so that could have changed again.
On the up side Ted's heart condition is acknowledged, though last time we saw him he was hospitalised and all weak and kitteny. I really didnt like it that that just got dropped.
I missed the last two issues of JLA so I'm expecting to be baffled by Max's current status. Cause that was all complicated last I saw.

Okay turning the heart condition thing into a running gag is actually beginning to bug me.

er, I mean- it was so serious and a big deal in the other title, but now its all like an excuse. I dont like that. But it isnt actually a surprise from the actually funny comic. So, ignore and hope it goes away.
Its kinda like JL concentrated. Like uber extra essence of that era of the league. Which is getting to be a bit much and I'm only up to page 42. Maybe there'll be story soon. (edited about a page later to say- yup, and now up to 63 am happy again)

I flicked through to the end and I'm grumpy. Beetle and Booster have had arguments before, yes. And Beetle has had time to grow up and Booster apparently just married for money and is anti matured compared to last time, yeah. (And also, none of the costume and powers changes from Extreme Justice get noticed even a little here, but again I could have missed something so, whatever.) But they are friends. They should be friends by the end of the book. Its sort of a rule.
*sniffle* they officially noticed my OTP and then made them not be friends. waaah! Its like its on purpose cause of the gay thing. That just isnt funny. That makes me feel all stomped on.
p123 is a necessary argument. They need to clear the air. They need to actually talk. They need to catch up and get to know each other again. And they need to do it before the end of the book!
Is this an ongoing title or a one off?

I mean the only good is that Booster wouldnt leave Beetle behind when the robots start attacking. But to get that line we have to get a moment of incompetence, and Booster just never has been incompetent.
Yeah, I'm going on about this. I was all in the happy place because Beetle, and Booster, and together again! And then they trash it. Waaah!

Batman being out of character around the old league actually really works. Funny and just that smidge of plausible enough.

Calling the official league on being arrogant. And them calling the former league on being incompetent. But actually it was not the official league's intervention that successfully resolved the crisis, so where do they get off on criticising?

Fire taking Mary Marvel under her wing... slightly worrying, if MM is meant to stay shiny...
I read a review that says she takes the place of Ice as the really innocent one. So of course being friends with Fire fits. But I rather wish I hadnt read that review because I'm still (how many years later?) upset about Ice, so not liking the replacement idea.

But I'm back to- laughing at the gay and trashing the too close friendships is Just. Not. Funny. I mean yeah I laugh, but then I think, and start to feel slightly ill.
I was looking forward to having my league back in all its slashy glory. Which is difficult with Ice gone, because that my other OTP. But instead I get the slash trashed. I'm unhappy.
Overall I liked the story, the funny came on at about the right pace, it was the league I loved and not the crappy version that made me stop buying comics, but, the subtext stuff is just leaving me frowny. Which is sad. But, I will buy the next one, if there is a next one. Because I dont want them all left like this.
What I want for the sequel- actual Blue and Gold interaction, Beetle and Booster back together and friends again like they should be. Captain Atom around for more of the time, and neither dying nor leaking. And please, Guy Gardner, because the league is like home for the Guy, and he just makes it all better. Then everyone can be annoyed at him and liking each other like the old days. Or, you know, maybe get to be friends with him, if you want to try the really unlikely version. But he should be part of this too.

Date: 2004-06-22 11:26 am (UTC)And maybe it's because I didn't spend a lot of time in love with these characters before (though I sure am /now/), I found the relationship between BB and BG kinda cute. It didn't feel like they had completely stopped being friends, but rather that they were both frustrated and kind of sad that they didn't click the way they used to. And I found their argument/declaration of love on the subway totally adorable, it didn't feel like they were being torn down at all? I dunno... were there every any canonical suggestions that one of them was in love with the other, or was it just wink-wink-nudge-nudge jokes or what? I'm probably getting a completely different reading since I'm not a long-term fan.
Sorry for rambling.... pleeeeeeease rec me more of these guys, please.

Extreme Justice is available as a download, probably from http://zcultfm.no-ip.org:6969/ , and has Beetle and Booster and Captain Atom.
JLE is a download somewhere too, apparently the complete run. I havent dled it because I'm only missing one or maybe two issues anyway and I'm trying to catch up with the Bat stuff.
Booster Gold is available as a download too, but is a tad bit strange.
Beetle has been turning up in Birds of Prey since after JL stopped. Booster hasnt, as far as I know. So this is basically why Beetle has grown up and Booster hasnt- Ted had time.

Also, regarding the Beetle and Booster stuff below, I can definitely see your point, and would probably be similarly pissed off were I a long time fan of a duo that got treated that way. I have high hopes for "I Can't Believe It's Not The Justice League", though. *g*

Date: 2004-06-22 02:15 pm (UTC)Booster and Beetle were best friends since the Max Lord version of the League started. They were a double act really. In at least one issue they had their own adventure off together away from the rest of the league. Whatever was going on they were most likely to be beside each other, bantering or backing each other up. Also, on the front covers they usually had either Fire and Ice, or Booster and Beetle, standing under the price stuff. Made it obvious who the pairs were.
When Beetle was in a coma Booster was the guy to sit by his bedside waiting for him to wake up. When Booster was apparently dead, flatlined on the operating table, Beetle was the one who broke down crying. They meant a lot to each other.
They also had screaming huge arguments sometimes. One time when Booster got fed up of the way the JL treated the two of them like children and ended up quitting the league. Another time Beetle punched Booster out because he used a funeral for a mutual friend as an opportunity to try and recruit a league member for a new super team he was forming. When the league broke down for a while Beetle tried to get on that team, and Booster was happy to help, but Beetle flunked the physical. (Beetle's intermittent weight problem has been a theme since waaay back.)
So, they've had their ups and downs but I always think of them as best friends, and so apparently does everyone else in the league.
The slash has always only been subtext, the usual buddy movie stuff. Opportunities. The fact that they hang out together almost all the time, in costume or out. The fact that they care who the other is seeing romantically. Which most of the time through the whole run of JL I have is nobody. So, these two guys, hang out together all the time, dont date, obviously care about each other. No nudge or wink, just your classic slash fodder.
In FKATJL they bring it right out into the open, make the lovers comparison, and then have their friendship hit the worst screaming argument and absolute lowest ebb I've ever seen it at. They arent trying to listen, understand, communicate, make plans (however dumb) together. They are about calling each other names and mocking. And I can fic around this until we get back to a romantic reconcilliation place, because obviously they are scared and unhappy and there is a clear way past this. But the plain fact is just taking what we are shown, they mention the gay, then trash the friendship. It struck me all wrong.
The guys are cute, they have a cute relationship. They are friends of the sort that drag each other into worse and worse trouble because they kinda feel invincible together and egg each other on. They always felt like partners. And then the titles stopped and apparently they havent talked for a while and yeah I agree with you they were frustrated and sad they didnt click. Always before they had stuff in common like that they both wanted to make money, and had both had money and lost it, and they were dressing up in costumes and doing the hero thing.
Now Beetle has been doing the desk job hard work to make his money, and had it trashed by a little metal bug thing. While Booster married for money. Beetle had quit the costume for a while for his own reasons, mostly fear based, then got back into it alongside the Bat people, then found out he actually couldnt any more because the doctors said it would kill him. And Beetle very nearly died because of his heart condition, and must have been scared, and was in hospital all weak and apparently had a plastic thing put in his heart, and Booster wasnt among the people who came to see him and now apparently doesnt care. Despite the fact he has previously had to live on life support because of damage to his heart, Booster seems to totally lack empathy. Well, I can see why, because its too scary to be true. I can see that whole dynamic working. Watching them work through it and get back to being close again would be great.
What bugs the hell out of me is that this 'lover' speech for the first time brings the slash into view, and concurrently trashes the relationship, so like I said, its like they're punishing them for the gay.
