beccaelizabethToday went not quite as planned. I had decided to go visit mum today, as she had asked. I even got as far as phoning and seeing if it was still the plan. Then I discovered a teensy tiny technical hitch, where I either needed to do the laundry right away or go without underwear. Which, given the amount of steel it takes to keep everything up these days, not happening.
So I did laundry, and watched Mirrormask, and Serenity.
The UK version of Serenity plays at the right aspect ratio on my TV. Also I've discovered a set of tweaks that make the picture go up top of the screen and the subtitles underneath, not covering the picture at all. Yaays.
Lots of detail in that film. Always noticing new bits.
Mirrormask was nice. I didn't love it, but it was nice. I don't know, I might get to liking it more later. With action movies I can just sit back and enjoy the kabooms, but a lot of other films I have to know how it ends before I can be sure I liked the middle. Depends what they end up doing with everyone.
Visually gorgeous, of course.
I'm not sure I liked the ending though. I mean... endings where everything ends up just like it was at the start, only with people appreciating it more... Is all very well, but I tend to think that sometimes people don't like their lives because their lives don't fit, so then they can go out and change them. Rather than changing themselves to fit the life. Even if it is just by upping the appreciation.
I also started writing an essay, but stopped when the phone went and also realised I needed to start from a totally different direction, with a title and stuff. I can't just hand in 2000 words on why fandom is the coolest thing ever, it doesn't prove I know anything about sociology. This is the problem about writing about things I love for college, always there is more cool stuff to tell than there is words to tell it in.
