Third in my Fool's Journey series, the rest in memories here or my fic tag. This one should basically make sense as a stand alone.

Summary: Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne. Best mates, worst enemies, sometimes both at once. They've got a lot of history. So even when the Initative took Ethan away, Giles was sure he'd see him again, sooner or later...
Now the late Ethan Rayne is turning out to be twice the trouble, and Giles must be the one to deal with it.

Eons ago, I wrote my Ripper part 0 - the prequel for my Ripper series. It brought Wesley back from the dead and put him in charge of the Watchers. But it also skimmed right past the details of how that worked, because it wouldn't be relevant to Giles and the main plot of that story. So there was to be a Wesley story that explained all.

That... hasn't so much happened.

But I had a big bunny for it.

So Wes and Buffy team up and go to LA to rescue Angel and the rest.

Problem - LA had a little bit of an apocalypse. That one Wes helped spark off.

But the army, helped by Riley and his lot, and a whole lot of new Slayers, have it all contained.

So Wes and Buffy meet Riley and head into the quarantine zone that used to be LA.

Around then theres kind of a 7 circles of hell theme kicking in.

Trouble is, writing any of it means writing tons of characters I've not put much thought into. I think it could be all kinds of cool, but I also think it would need someone not me to make it so.
Which is basically why I stalled out on writing it.


I could attempt to find a writing partner, but since my contribution would basically be all that plot bunny up there and maybe some encouraging noises... seems unworky.


I always have this trouble. I love the worldbuilding, coming up with the setup, the whole LA=hell post apocalypse bit, but the actual words on paper part?
*sigh*

so, anyways, plot bunny up for cowritten type adoption. apply within.

or just say if the bunny looks interesting. whatever. is all good.

“Spirit and flame, to purify.” Ethan intoned.

“Always clean your works.” Ripper replied, equally solemn.

They both grinned.

Ethan picked up the pen-like contraption he’d put together for the task, dipped it in alcohol, and ran it through the candle flame. The traced outline of the Mark of Eyghon sat on his arm, waiting. Ethan whispered as he dipped the needle in the ink, then raised it to his arm.

“Last chance to back out.” Ripper offered with a half smirk. “It is permanent.”

Ethan looked at him steadily, and pressed the needle into his own skin. “Nothing is permanent.”

Giles had considered acid, or lasers, or even fire, but the Mark was a thing of magic, so magic would seem the best way.

“Youthful indiscretions?” the healer witch asked.

Giles just smiled tightly.

“Don’t worry. Soon fix this.”

She got paper and pen, drew symbols, then soaked it in whisky and pressed it to his arm. Chanted, until black stain spread up through it.

She pulled the paper off his arm, put it in a bowl and set fire to it.

“See? It worked. Clean.”

He rubbed his thumb over the empty place carefully. It still felt the same.

"What do you mean, there can be only one?"

"Do you think it was just a coincidence you always got in fights with the other Slayers?"

Trying to figure the structure of a usual episode:
It starts with the Teaser bit before the credits, which builds up to something that should make people want to watch this week. And after the official opening titles there is usually a quiet bit so they can put the writing on the screen, with all the names and stuff. Then four acts, I think, with spaces for commercial breaks, each ending on a mini cliffhanger and having a complete chunk of action in it. The final chunk has the big confrontation, and then a wind down and wrap up bit at the end (like all sitting around in the sun at school joking about dating on the hellmouth) or possibly a thing that pretends to wind down but does a cliffhanger instead.

I mean to write my 'Ripper' series as if it were actual episodes, so that was why I sat down to figure this out. But it put a new perspective on the episode too. Cool.

Teaser, Who are the players and what is at stake, Complications, Results and revelations, Big Fight, wind down.
TV show structure.

I could probably look that up somewhere if I thought of the right keywords.


Incidentally, Annotated Buffy is a really cool useful place I keep forgetting exists. Been reading through the ep on there and it has all sorts of linky reference goodness.



Crafty TV Writing is interesting to read too.

Ethan dug through his pockets as the two of them stumbled out into the Sunnydale night together and pulled out a paper bag. He popped some of the contents in his mouth and offered the bag to Giles. “Want some?”

Giles looked inside, then gave Ethan a hard stare. “Sweets. Ethan, why on earth would you think I would accept sweets from you?”

“Because I'm not a stranger?”

“You're stranger than anyone I know.” Giles accused. Ethan accepted it as a compliment. “And consider what I know. I know last time you were here you drugged the chocolate. The time before that it was enchanted fancy dress. And just now you go and joke you've put poison in my beer. So why, precisely, would I trust you?”

Ethan gave Giles a look, filled with promise. “Because, you'll have far more fun that way.” He smirked, and proffered the bag again.

Giles stared at him, trying to maintain a glare, but it dissolved into a grin that threatened giggles. He pulled out a sweet at random, and ate an aniseed twist.
