previously in this bunny:
So thats Wesley, Buffy and Riley, Connor and the Groosalugg and maybe Anne running around LA on a quest for useful bits, fighting demons, to get to the center of this new hell, the alley that last fight happened in.

So I was thinking, why those characters? How do they fit? How do they contrast?

Wes and Riley surprised me with having actually quite a lot in common - former golden boy, booted out by organisation they were dedicated to, tried to continue the mission alone. Ended up needing a team. Riley's team was pretty much who he joined up with in the first place, Wesley's... really not. But in my fic, Wes is now back with the Watchers, so they've ended up with that similarity too. But from the different routes and attitudes, lots of contrast too.
Also in contrast, Riley has MarySue!wifey, but Wes got left all alone. Since Riley's wife was pretty much designed to make all the single people feel bad, there's plenty of angst to go around in that group.

Wes and Connor, both raised by somewhat dark father figures to be weapons in the fight against evil. Connor was rather worse off of course.

Connor and Groo have the whole almost-human in a hell dimension thing to work with. Both made a name for themselves. Groosalugg is a title, the undefeated. Connor was the Destroyer. Both dated Cordy. Both have issues with Angel.
Both have strength and speed and such to make Riley feel all inferior again.

Wes and Anne... Anne I'm not entirely sure is in the group, but they've got some stuff in common. Wes went through a lot of changes. Both been bit by vampires, spent time in a demon dimension, got attacked by zombie cops, took money from W&H. Anne got out rather cleaner and less injured than Wes.

Buffy and Anne were meant for a compare/contrast back when she was Lily. Now she's being Anne, Buffy's middle name, and helping the helpless. But in a totally non-Slayer way. With caring, and home, and looking after people.

So I'm sort of throwing characters at each other at semi random, but then finding ways they fit. So now I'm vaguely wondering if any two characters can do this.
I mean are there actually any 2 characters anywhere with nothing in common?

Eons ago, I wrote my Ripper part 0 - the prequel for my Ripper series. It brought Wesley back from the dead and put him in charge of the Watchers. But it also skimmed right past the details of how that worked, because it wouldn't be relevant to Giles and the main plot of that story. So there was to be a Wesley story that explained all.

That... hasn't so much happened.

But I had a big bunny for it.

So Wes and Buffy team up and go to LA to rescue Angel and the rest.

Problem - LA had a little bit of an apocalypse. That one Wes helped spark off.

But the army, helped by Riley and his lot, and a whole lot of new Slayers, have it all contained.

So Wes and Buffy meet Riley and head into the quarantine zone that used to be LA.

Around then theres kind of a 7 circles of hell theme kicking in.

Trouble is, writing any of it means writing tons of characters I've not put much thought into. I think it could be all kinds of cool, but I also think it would need someone not me to make it so.
Which is basically why I stalled out on writing it.

I could attempt to find a writing partner, but since my contribution would basically be all that plot bunny up there and maybe some encouraging noises... seems unworky.

I always have this trouble. I love the worldbuilding, coming up with the setup, the whole LA=hell post apocalypse bit, but the actual words on paper part?
*sigh*

so, anyways, plot bunny up for cowritten type adoption. apply within.

or just say if the bunny looks interesting. whatever. is all good.

Does Wesley's Father have any fans?
Or fic?

I was just thinking, practically every character who shows up on BtVS or Ats has fans and fic and stuff. But Wesley's Father is a character I wanted to hit since before we ever met him. So, I'm not seeing the fan potential. Plus the whole thing where technically it wasn't him we saw.

Yet there are stories to be made of a man who truly believes that how he acts is the correct and indeed only way to be, a Watcher who was probably raised the same way he raised Wes. A guy Wes could have grown up to be?

So now that little bit of story in RFJ 0 which was about him is threatening to turn into a whole worldview from his pov.

And this was sparked from seeing an icon of him and Wes, only with Wes out of focus so it was really just him.

Pictures make thoughts.

and also, its 0330 in the morning, which makes its own kinds of thoughts. Like, 'I should really go to bed'.

What languages does Wesley speak/read/understand?
I thought Korean but that was Angel. Wes translated the Kungai, badly.
Other than that isn't springing to mind right now.

Name research of the day

Wyndam looks like 'win damn', which kind of suits the trouble Wesley gets into by winning. But the surname probably comes from Wymondham, the Norfolk town. Which is just down the road from me. I've only heard the word said, so that seemed pretty obvious to me, since it is said just the same. You can see a satellite photo on Google Maps if you look at Wymondham, Norfolk, NR18.
It probably either means 'Wymund's home' (Why world, or Why man) or home on the winding path. Or alternatively the town "might take its name from its pleasant situation, for 'win' signifies a chosen or beloved place so the 'win-munde-ham' is a village 'on the pleasant mount' and the situation exactly answers." It is a Saxon name.
There's a book full of Windhams here, but they only time they spell it Wyndam is when they list all the variants. Windham is most usual in the USA, Wyndham in the UK and Australia.

Pryce looks like the modern word Price, cost, but it probably derives from Ap Rhys, son of Rhys. Rhys means "enthusiasm" in Welsh.

Wales was never conquered by the Anglo-Saxons. They built a bit of a wall instead, apparently.

But later Welsh history gets rather depressing.

And I spent far too long finding all that out instead of writing.

I can't remember what made me think of this, but I was comparing what Giles and Wesley did when they went off to be rebels.

Wesley bought a motorbike, started wearing leather, and decided to be a rogue demon hunter. All "lone wolf" and making a big point of how he doesnt work 'with' people. Yes, we know how real that was. He's more of a faithful hound type really. Feed him, set him things to hunt, loyal for life. But his ideal, what he thought he should want in order to get away from the Council, was to be lone.

Whereas Giles says "I went to London. I fell in with the worst crowd that would have me."

We don't have any other data on what he did, and we only have his much later opinion on the wisdom of it, but that line makes it sound like when he left the Council he went looking for another group. He didnt so much set out on his own as try and find somewhere to fit in that suited him better.

So there's a fic I've started about those days that I wasnt so happy with the beginning bit, and now I know why. Because I think it's kind of wrong. So, I'll cut it down to a drabble and I'll post it in a seperate post (because words are hard enough to make in the first place, so I dont want to waste them once made).
