Sometimes, Blakes7 is just fun.

... and then I try and figure out why, and why all this futility and anarchy and death isn't quite as depressing as similarly themed modernism, and I have trouble coming up with an answer. I think it's partly that each week they have a story with a beginning, middle, and end, that mostly makes sense (sort of, in a SF way), and doesn't actively try and make you spork your eyes out (unless you count the costumes, FX, or occasional color schemes). So, rather different than modernism then.

I still don't have a good reason why it's amusing to watch one of our 4 season 'heroes' stalk the other as he huddles terrified and they're both likely to die any minute. Possibly the acting. The whole 'here kitty kitty' vibe just makes it a bit difficult to take seriously.

Also, there are spaceships, and computers made mostly of blinky, and people being very decorative and shiny.

... no, add it all up, and laughing probably still makes me a bad person. And yet...

Futility, anarchy, and death... so I escape from Modernism study by watching Blakes 7? Hah.

I love it when they screw up and everything goes horribly wrong. Mostly because they do so in logical twisty ways that have emotional continuity. The whole thing with Control and Blake believing his own press was excellent.

... okay, I also like the Big Stagey Acting!!! Because it's like Large Print for the body language impaired. But there's subtle in there too.

I'm watching the one with Travis on trial now. Shouty!Travis doesn't bring a whole hell of a lot of subtle to it. I'd love to give the big speech to a bunch of actors to see what they do with it.

Servalan :-)
I think she looks better in the military looking outfits than the ones with a fabric shortage.

The Federation has a subtlety shortage too. All the stuff we see is about massacres and executions and rigged trials. But there's hints there are still people who believe the whole thing is on the level. How? What does the Federation look like from their point of view? Are they just drugged stupid? And the deaths kind of draw attention from the drugging and all the bits more subtle than massacre. I mean, if the drugging is evil in and of itself then they could be fighting that, but no, it always has this added killing people thing so there's never any doubt.

I keep trying to invent an interstellar government that works. Is a bit tricky, but much fun. Would you want a lot of Earth type diversity out there? Would a mess of planets that might go to war amongst themselves but had a whole lot of self determination really be better than a centralised system that stomps on the corners? Is there a good compromise? Big politics questions.

... I should probably study politics. If I want to make stuff up about it.

Right. have to stand up to change discs. Must put laptop down.

For reasons known only to my subconscious I woke up from dreaming about Blakes 7. To be specific, I was trapped in a crowd about to be massacred, I spotted Vila, we called in Blake, and we were about to run away through a sliding panel in a changing room when we discovered it was newly screwed, and so were we. There was shooting, there was acquiring tools, there was finding behind the panel another sheet of plywood, and then there was saying sod this for a lark, borrowing a knife, and a rather complicated set of running away that involved messing with the lift, sliding down a lift shaft, and eventually getting where we were going once I'd torn all my clothes, got friction burns and entirely run out of breath. Cleverly saving Blake's life in the process. I'd say I joined the crew then, but that might imply deciding to follow Blake, and no. I decided to give them the benefit of my actually functioning brain.
... I haven't watched B7 for a while but my subconscious has opinions. And possibly Avon envy.

So, anyway, once I woke up I started figuring who I'd cast in my version, as you do:

Okays: Which older woman could play Blake?
Strong, able to play up the appearance of weakness, velvet and iron.

If I could decide exactly which band of older I mean I could probably have more of a go at that.

'Blake' is deeply, deeply depressing.

You think Not Fade Away was bad?

Imagine if Buffy turned up and staked Angel, because he pulled that crap with the Circle of the Black Thorn but when she arrived to call him on it he chose the words "I set all this up" as the perfect way to explain.

That ending... is such a mixture of *facepalm* and utter tragedy... Actually tragedy is *facepalm* taken to the ultimate extreme, really, the whole mess playing out with everyone's personality leaving them only one way to react.

But... when the guy with the gun says "Stand still" it is a good idea to assume he *really really means it*.

*facepalm*

I hadn't seen that last season before. The last ten minutes of a couple of episodes, and all of 'Orbit' repeatedly (which I always find funny in an evil laugh way, but which really is very depressing too from a serious angle). They spent the whole season having every single thing go wrong and every plan be futile, and Avon wasn't exactly sane to start with, and he totally lost it in such a cold way... I mean its fun from one point of view, they never that I noticed broke premise or character to get to the utter depression, but from another... ouch!

I like my version of Blake taped off UK Gold better... actually I can't remember exactly how it went. I think it was "Blakes 7 will be back next week", and then you're left to wonder *how* exactly. But it could have been "Blakes 7 will be taking a break next week", and then is more a question of "No shit!"

I usually laugh at the everybody dies bit. I mean, okay, evil laugh of badness, and I shouldn't. But this time I was far more 'wah!' because I watched them all the way down and it was... You know, they tried, and they only screwed up in ways that seemed perfectly sensible at the time, and... Everybody dies!

Deeply depressing.

There's a guy on Blakes 7 (episode 'Warlord') representing his planet and wearing the Seal of Rassilon.
Wardrobe recycling at its best, bringing the crossover crack...

Today I have been mostly watching Blakes 7
season 4

it is as always a fun mixture of dystopias, twisty plot, snarky character interaction, and utter *facepalm*

(War of the sexes? With a little moral at the end about running out of people? In a 'verse with CLONING? *facepalm* Though to be fair the planet was cut off and going low tech. It was just still a really irritating story.)

Also, Avon needs slapping. Almost as much as he gets slapped, come to think. I mean, snarky fun, yes, but dear lord am I glad he ain't a real person I'd have to put up with.

I'm also getting terrible urges to copy the eyeshadow. And possibly some of the costumes. (Shiny!)

been watching more B7. Some episodes more fun than others.

Sarcophagus was dumb. I mean I like it when Avon is the coolest, but only if he is the coolest, not the others the dumbest. I felt like they'd marysued him. Also, ghost story, boring. Like when seaQuest does demons, wrong show.

OTOH I might be getting cranky because my head still hurts. I had painkillers but they didn't work and I can't have more for hours. Big grumpy sulky.

Other episodes have been cool, or had neat twists in. The one where the only person Avon ever loved turned out to be undercover and hunting him doesn't so much count as a twist, more an inevitability in Grim and Gritty Dark world. But it also makes the last episode make extra sense. Can't trust, even people he is obsessed with.

Mind you, I've always thought the basic problem was if someone with a gun says 'stand still' you bloody well stand still, no matter who you are. But noooooo...

I seem to have seen at most one in three episodes of this season. Kind of cool, I get new stories.

I think I should probably stop watching for a while though. Grumpy mood wants to kill off... er, practically everyone except Avon. And Vila, because he is fun too. Everyone else can go boom. Annoying.

Shall find something else to do. Quite possibly more lying very still in the dark. Always fun.

I keep on leaving the B7 DVD menu in the machine looping because I find the ship hum soothing.

Blakes 7 series 3 hath arrived :)
I've watched the first disc already

post arrived before the food did. Had to let the discs warm up, they were that cold I thought they might mist up the DVD player. Got some books too.
Food was only 50 minutes after the 2 hour delivery timeslot. Even the driver has noticed this seems to happen to me a lot :eyeroll: Not that I get any money off or anything. But hey, had vegelasagne for lunch, and twiglets in a barrel. I'm not sure if I should keep buying barrels of twiglets. I have this problem with stopping eating them. I mean they might be healthier than chocolate in theory, but a whole barrel eated continuously?

Season 3 of B7 is a bit different, because the big bad federation is all blowed up so now its more about rebuilding. I think. So far its mostly been about Servalan trying to kill them still. Just in a more personal way. But if they do follow up on the rebuilding bit (I've seen the first two seasons about a bazillion times, and only scrappy eps from the rest) then they follow the interesting bit. Blowing everything up is easy, making things work after is the hard part. Why its annoying that Star Wars ends when it does.

If end of season 2 = Angel in the alley, I'm getting all sorts of 'oh noes where Angel goed?' spin off ideas. Is very handy if you can't get the whole cast back. Suddenly its all about the absence of the one who was keeping you going, and what people will do to either get them back or carry the flame forward. Fun.

Blakes 7 end of season 2 = Angel in the alley end of s5

I love that ending. Just heading into the fight, no logical hope, doing it anyway.

previous comments might have suggested I don't like Blake. Which, kind of true. But I love him around as a character because he makes such interesting stories. Also Blake&Avon are just... zingy. Sparks. Stuff. Avon doesn't make much sense unless you figure he's really *intense* about Blake. Love, Hate, whatever, some serious focus there. So much fun.

now waiting for the post to bring the next season.
*sigh*

am up to the last episode of season 2 of Blakes 7
:(
They get more fun as they go along
Blake screws up really badly
and is a manipulative bastard
and then gets mind controlled
its really fun

Blake kind of reminds me of Angel. Its the tendency to go for the grand gesture and pull everyone else along for the ride.

Avon isn't much like Spike apart from the snark.

Servalan is fun but I have like this craving for her to be actually *competent*. My AU B7 plot bunny of doom is mostly about trying to make the Federation work, make sense, be run by people who really believe in what they are doing. Its kind of the easy way out to make the people in charge be so very selfish and corrupt. If both the Federation and the rebels have a point it gets much more interesting.

So, going to order season 3 then go watch the last episode.
:)
fun

am watching Blakes 7 season 2

on the one hand, its reminding me of all the reasons it is kind of difficult to be a fan of this show
like, the plots.
oh noes! Liberator will be destroyed! We shall all give up and be doooomed!
but look, Liberator isn't the only ship in the universe with a glowy arse! Why did we not think of that before! Ship go boom not us!

and the part where Gan stays behind to fight so the others can get away. so they get about 20 yards away and stand around to watch him fight. And, using the never mentioned magic power, he makes the guards to forget all use of such strange things as boomsticks and to jump at him inefficiently one at a time. Gan smash!
dear lord this show desperately needed a decent fight choreographer.

And the *clothes*. I mean in many ways they are fabulous, of course. Sleeves bigger than his head! Tiny mini skirt intermittently covered by billowy see through white skirt! Big huge robes! 2 inch heels, on the blokes. Fabulous silver high heels and skin tight body suits on the bad girls, of course. And all the 'leather'. Not a very forgiving material. Avon really needs to stand up straighter. I'm pretty sure he wasn't as fat as that top made him look when he slouched. Probably.
But he's wandering around in studded black leather being fabulously snarky as always. Got to love that.

And thats the other hand. It somehow adds up to easy to love, and really great fun. And okay, part of that is because I'm constantly rewriting it in my head. It makes me think stories, so I like it. But its just fun to watch.

Blakes 7

Am watching my season 1 DVDs
have been avoiding this because whenever I do I get these unkillable plot bunnies for re-imagining the whole thing
kind of like they did to Battlestar
only entirely different
it started with a dream where I was Servalan, only cooler, so the whole thing is an unwritable uber MarySue
and I'm on the Federation side
which makes interesting stories sort of tricky

today that plot bunny is staying relatively quiet

now I have a whole entirely new one for reinventing the 7 themselves

as a multi racial group of androgynous vaguely oriental/viking style people, with a set of crimes including 'body modification'. No, I don't know why. Its a plot bunny. They just bite.

Now I'm inventing clothes.
I actually do that quite a lot when I watch B7.
I think all the rainbow colors and nets and leather bits and round neck things and really big square shoulders are pretty.
just, you know, maybe not in quite those combinations
so I invent things.

Next I'll end up playing with eyeshadow again.

*sigh*
