Farscape, Flax, and alien physiology
May. 28th, 2006 07:01 pmFinished watching Farscape episode "The Flax".
Fun because finally an alien female with no breasts.
I mean, breasts are these strange pretty much non functional lumps that humans have and nothing else bothers with, and yet, we head out into the galaxy? Breasts everywhere! Usually large. And symmetrical. When was the last time you saw an asymmetric alien? Okay, DNA mad scientist, but that was meant to look messed up.
And, okay, a lot of the time there's just a presumption that no breasts = male, which was made funny in this ep, but really, what's with all the lumpy bits? Or the lack of lumps in other places. When was the last time aliens had sexy udders? Not that I personally can imagine finding udders sexy, but that isn't the point.
There's all sorts seen in the insectoid aliens or whatever, but the humans in makeup tend to stick with 2 sexes with visible lumps. Silly.
Presumption of heterosexuality, also silly. I mean, the way they talk about the kissing, they pick opposite sex crewmates as the other people it could happen with. Is space! She couldn't assume it could happen with guys? Different culture! I mean any culture that has to control population, it would make sense to encourage activity that doesn't lead to procreation. And they live in big ships, but not all that big, so population control is an issue.
Also also, while having a male looking female character is fun, the reactions of the rest of the crew to her is actually not very fun at all. I mean the funny is in the oops, so there has to be an oops, but then they are mean. Surely it should be oops my bad? Not oops wandering off all ack face.
Also also also, the other characters of her species refer to her as him once, I think. If so, somebodys oops.
