Why Sunday first? Because I wrote it on stripy colors paper after my little notepad ran out.
Little notepad was new for the weekend.
It's kind of intimidating to look at it and realise how many words must be in there.

The Bechdel panel was later in the day but I’ll put it here for thematic connection.

I wish these notes were more coherent, panels are way more interesting than my writing about them.

There's another page here about Originality in SF, and then some things I didn't make notes on.

I've written up the Rob Shearman talk but since he has an LJ I think I'll message him and ask before posting.

Ruler of the Universe ... needs to be seen to be believed. Is highly fun.

Man of Iron isn't even believed when it is seen. Hilarious. The origins of the script though... mind boggling.

The future of fandom panel I went to. I think I managed to be annoying. There's certain comments about IQ and 'well written books' that I simply cannot let stand. IQ is a meaningless number. But I also made some notes on the suggestions for finding and growing SF groups. I just didn't put them in the same place as all these other notes. Handy.

And then there was 2000-0500 at the Dead Dog Party, talking, in the bar. I have a five page written conversation but it's only really fascinating interacting with the spoken conversation it accompanied for at least four hours, and doesn't translate well to the web.
Someone promised to do an Intro Newbies RPGs panel. Someone else promised to do Knitting and crochet and stuff as a workshop. I have this in writing.

Right. I'm going back to bed.

So after the panels there was a very long party of much talking.

I'm going to go back and start typing my Friday and Saturday notes.
They're kind of massive. Wish luck...

… ack, I just found where I wrote down the room for the room party I forgot to go to. Sorries!

There was a book quiz with book covers all over the hotel. I hunted them down Friday while learning to navigate rooms. There was only one I recognised. Unfortunately it was from one of the Dianne Wynne Jones Chrestomanci books, and it was the figure of Chrestomanci in a top hat that’s actually on the cover of every book in that edition of that series. I think it was from Charmed Life though, by the colors, because it didn’t match the ones I’ve already got in that version. But I never got around to writing it down and telling the answer. *sigh*

Thursday night I note ‘people laughed’. I think that was a good thing. Probably.

my audios just arrived! 8th Doctor from The Chimes of Midnight, 6 story subscription with bonus Maltese Penguin. :-)

... now I has to decide if I wants more typing notes or listen more to 8th Doctor I wanted to order since last November.

... anyone who has burning desire to read my con notes may well be out of luck...

I had heard from lots of places that this was a really good one.
... do you ever feel like someone reversed the polarity when you were little, so now you're back to front of most everyone else? I get that feeling a lot.

I liked the setup. I liked the resolution. I got really, really bored in the middle.

I guess I like the blowing things up stories better.

Okay, so those aren’t very coherent notes.

Clothes are signifiers of class, and the relationship of that character to the class system. Smart suits and no mask says they’re the establishment. Scruffy and covered in badges is counterculture. Masked is hiding from the establishment. Clothes are never innocent. And many shows difference their heroes by their styles.

Not my favourite panel. Invisible womens.

A theory

Have been hearing / seeing some complaints about piling angst on woe on misfortune on characters. I gave up on BSG because it was getting predictable, I just had to imagine the most depressing thing that could happen now. Yet my favourite author says she thinks of plots by thinking "What's the worst thing that I can do to him now?"

So where's the difference?

I was thinking on something from PC's writer workshop - keep track of a character's goals and make sure they either obtain them or fail in satisfying manner.

If you give a character a problem, and then another problem, and then another nother problem, then they never get anywhere. Goals aren't obtained and they keep failing at new things rather than having final fail at some huge thing. No resolution.

So I think it's not that I dislike doing depressing things to characters. I dislike doing depressing things to characters and not giving them a chance to fight back, achieve goals anyway, or change in some way that no longer finds it depressing. It's all setup with no satisfying payoff.

Redemption ‘09
Book thread
Classics

Yes that’s mostly a book list.
The conversation started out about the Classics with names I’d heard of, then headed straight for feminism, wandered through racism and homophobia, and did your basic recap of fandom and indeed English Lit issues since the 1970s. Good company but I think I wrote down less of it because of the preach/choir effect.

Again!
It has explosions, and sword fights, and women running rings around men, and complicated timey wimey stuff, and a bit of a human redemption thing and a rather splendidly varied religion thing, and monsters with big scary voices, and a bit of a mystery full of clues which managed to be a bit mysterious and still tell you everything, even if it's not very surprising cause Paul Cornell told about it at the weekend. Oh, and it had the bad guy saying the title All In Capitals, which I feel is an essential part of the Doctor Who experience. Plus there's several kinds of funny mixed in with all the violence and moral dilemmas, which is rather win.
Also it has the Doctor with his shirt off, which would admittedly be more interesting if this wasn't an audio, but there's a bit of hurt/comfort, and him being a bit completely mad. As it should be.
And apparently he smells of honey.

So, basically, I want to hug this story, and start over listening again from the beginning.

But then just when you think it's all over there's a story arc bit at the end and suddenly I want to know what happens next as well. And I have what happens next on a disc right here. And if I was feeling more well and less dozy I'd have a dilemma on my hands. As it is I keep sneezing and I think I'm going back to bed.

After that was opening ceremony and pub quiz.
I helped giving out paper and pens, which is another task I find I am quite capable of, yaays.
I have concluded quiz teams work better when they're table sized. Also when they don't fall asleep.
But I got all of one question about a topic other than Science Fiction correct.
... It was about Top Gear, and I only knew because of the 8th Doctor audio parody, but still.
