Loki is a shapeshifter, and a god, and can do useful clever things, like in this case take over as the mother while the baby got done growing. ( Read more... )
There was also a spin of dream where the baby was King Arthur's, who was secretly not technically King, because the sword in the stone didn't check the equipment first. They'd spent months hiding that the King was getting big, and now the baby was born and was black they were going to say Gwen was the mother, cause she was the right colour (this being cast from Merlin on the BBC) and figured Lancelot would understand. It's an answer to the Lancelot question I had not previously thought of. Probably Gwen's brother would be father then. King Arthur would go out carousing in disguise, but the disguise mostly involved leaving stuff undisguised, so it was a very realistic disguise. And nobody would guess, because you don't tend to go around guessing which barmaid is secretly the King. And the parts where Arthur saved the kingdom from anarchy and did the round table bit and a golden age would all stay the same. Under armour it's all much of a muchness anyway.
