I dreamed I was pregnant and very ill, and the treatment would hurt the baby, like with Cordelia and Miles Vorkosigan. But there was more time, and there was also Loki. Loki is a shapeshifter, and a god, and can do useful clever things, like in this case take over as the mother while the baby got done growing. Read more... )

There was also a spin of dream where the baby was King Arthur's, who was secretly not technically King, because the sword in the stone didn't check the equipment first. They'd spent months hiding that the King was getting big, and now the baby was born and was black they were going to say Gwen was the mother, cause she was the right colour (this being cast from Merlin on the BBC) and figured Lancelot would understand. It's an answer to the Lancelot question I had not previously thought of. Probably Gwen's brother would be father then. King Arthur would go out carousing in disguise, but the disguise mostly involved leaving stuff undisguised, so it was a very realistic disguise. And nobody would guess, because you don't tend to go around guessing which barmaid is secretly the King. And the parts where Arthur saved the kingdom from anarchy and did the round table bit and a golden age would all stay the same. Under armour it's all much of a muchness anyway.

I was planning a scene where a guy chooses an outfit for his new girlfriend to wear, kind of a dare-you, how little will she wear in public. So then she does the same for him. Only I then realised that she could be wearing a wide range of formalwear or other clothes, expected outfits for a variety of situations, but he could be wearing... well, beach stuff, basically. Even most sports cover more skin on a man than awards dresses do on a woman. So at the moment he's wearing a waistcoat and a kilt, maybe leather.

But I was trying to think of outfits for a guy to look slutty in that don't involve skirts.

Suggestions? ... possibly with photos?

There's stuff about JE choosing between StJohn Rivers and Rochester
and there's stuff about how Helen Burns and Bertha Mason/Rochester represent parts of Jane's psyche
but Helen Burns is just like St John Rivers, only StJ is a bully and Helen is bullied,
and Bertha does the same drinking and shagging things that Rochester does,
and the main difference between them is gender-and-power.
Helen Burns is a girl who just accepts being told what to do and accepts god's will and looks forward to death and dies,
StJohn Rivers is a man who goes around telling people what to do and accepts god's will and looks forward to death and dies.
Bertha and her husband do much the same things, but Bertha gets locked in an attic for them, by Rochester, who keeps doing them with continental women instead.
The only difference in those pairs is the men have the power and the women are powerless.

But Jane doesn't choose either of those men when they're still the powerful telling her what to do people.
And she does not accept powerlessness like Helen, or even live violently in restriction like Bertha, she just runs away.

She chooses Rochester before she knows he or his situation have changed though. But the book rewards her by making him pretty much powerless. He's still the guy who is about sex not religion, but now he really needs her so he's not going to be locking her away anywhere.

But the women get writ about as parts of her psyche, and the men don't. And those two women out of lots and lots of women get writ about as parts of her psyche, which is weird, because what makes them more psychological than Mrs Fairfax or Georgiana or Adele or Mary?

There's not just a binary opposition going on there. For most of the book the assorted women have ways of life Jane rejects, and the assorted men are great big bullies. Once Jane finds a way of life she can live with, with other women living the same way, she goes back to Rochester, who isn't a bully any more, cause Bertha got out and burned away his capacity to do the same thing to others.

We kept on being told to notice the fire-and-ice binaries in the book, and we wrote columns on the board with fire-Rochester-passion and ice-StJohn-reason, but that ignores so much I think it's stupid.

I should probably phrase that better in an essay though.

you know we're supposed to do 100 hours for a 10 credit unit
but that's only 10 days of 10 hour days
I feel like I do that just trying to do the essay

I'd say I don't know where the time goes, but I can name a half a dozen other things I was doing today, including coloring in my arm where I tried drawing on a new configuration of the Stargate dial home code tattoo that I've been meaning to get since forever. I ruined a yellow highlighter cause the black ink came off on it and it doesn't even make the pattern look yellow. I sulk.

Also my food went past date when I wasn't looking.
Also at some point I left the margerine out on the worktop. Since I can't remember when that happened I have to assume a worst case and throw it out. Now I have bread but no marg.

I can see the start of the dial home code whichever way around I have my arm. Cool.
I keep thinking also I could put the Seal of Rassilon on my shoulder, but they keep on adding to the mythology and whenever they do they make Rassilon seem like more of an arse, yet it's still the only pretty swirly symbol we have for Time Lord. It's the Prydonian seal. That means it means all the most interesting people.
I can't decide what colors to make it though. On the computer I can make it a starscape but it would be difficult to tattoo that.

... my brain cannot do concentrating on one single thing for very long at all at all. This is why essays are all like dandelions and not just start middle finish.
