We're talking less overall, I think, in terms of that sort of in-depth meta. At least, the people who were around in the LJ days are. I think a lot of that is we've seen too much of the really nasty backlash at this point in our careers, and it doesn't seem worth it any more. (That's certainly why I've stopped aspiring to write epic meta.)
There's still some of it on Tumblr but it's not easy to find and it's not via the people I used to know on lj and discussion is, of course, nearly impossible.
Fic is going straight to AO3 now, and a lot of the fic-related discussion is happening in comments there now, or on authors' tumblrs. Also, in terms of essays on fandom culture and history and tropes and even ships and so on there's more activity than you might think on fanlore- it's not great for opinion posts but if you're the sort of person who just wants to write down all the things about the thing, it works.
A lot of the people who were into short chatty posts and instant episode reactions are doing it on twitter. (I don't grok twitter, but I know occasionally I'll run into a fan who's like, oh yeah, I do all my fanning on twitter now.)
Imzy is the new thing that everyone is hoping will bring back meta. The layout and format never really clicked for me and I have this horrible fear that the website is going to flame out in a wave of financial mismanagement (buying free pizza and cake and t-shirts and stickers for all your users is maybe not the BEST use of venture capital, dudes.) ANYWAY there are a lot of fans there and some people are loving it, and for all it didn't click with me it is way better set up for meta than twitter or tumblr or AO3, and if you want an invite I still have some.
(lost your comment, didn't mean to wait this long to reply)
:-( to loss of meta. tumblr for meta is not worky and is difficult to find. OTW is pretty excellent. twitter is... baffling. don't get how anyone fits a thought in those.
Imzy I keep hearing of I think I would like an invite, yes, please :-)
Imzy is apparently out of private beta as of today (you can see how much I've been paying attention to it, I didn't even notice, and I can't figure out if I can even still give invites because the account pages are so confusing) but you shouldn't need an invite anymore? Go to imzy.com and see if you can make an account and if not I'll see if I can figure out if I can still send you an invite.
