I started reading the Blue Rose RPG rules I bought on Wednesday.
They were recommended by a guy on tumblr as inclusive about gender and sexuality with the caveat they also treat trans and nonbinary characters as Super Special, with a fancy made up word for them.
And, yeah.
But they *explicitly have* trans and nb characters, and explain how they fit in different societies. And the main civilisation considers bisexual to be default, and has a fancy word for heterosexuals, who are considered possibly a bit limited but left to get on with it if they dont get judgey or tell other people what to do.
But trans and nb characters attract the attention of spirits, because curiosities.
So, you know, swings and roundabouts.
There's suggested character arcs for transitioning, socially and biologically, through methods herbal or arcane. Or characters can transition before the story starts and get on with things. One NPC in charge of getting trans and nb needs seen to is described as a short and handsome guy. There is someone in the royal... guards I think? Someone chosen to see to those needs. Because of course that's part of the world.
One set of dramas could be starting a character in one of the nearby evil kingdoms, one of which thinks Super Special means making them slaves with perks, while the other thinks they need re educating.
So there's one kingdom with all the positive accepting default options, and a couple of different varieties of evil.
I can't quite decide what I think of that, but cautiously might think yaay, because story bothered with inclusive options.
The awaken and escape from evil kingdoms background arc also applies to the talking psychic animals. Who are super special because psychic. Sooooo... another way it makes me go hmmmm.
But it's game rules so the character options all come with hooks for adventure and character arcs.
I havent read very much yet but I like so far how relationships and character development and all that person stuff are getting a bunch of page space. It seems like using it to dungeon crawl would be missing the point.
It's a very thick book and I'll be reading it in several stages I think.
But it has interesting bits so far.
