Supergirl Parasite
Dec. 24th, 2017 11:06 pmI just finished watching an episode where the climate scientist gets changed into the Parasite and goes around killing people? I have some objections to the theme there.
But I have very strong objections to Kara's contention that they mustn't use their powers for money.
If the DEO expect her to turn up for work on the regular, or even be on call, then they should be paying her, like any other agent. Police, firefighters, doctors, they all work for the good of others, but they have absolutely no obligation to do it for free in this world. If Mon-el needs a job to pay the bills and Kara's continued employment is necessary for food and flat and all then they should absolutely get fair pay for their work. There's pay structures already for hazardous call outs. It is a thing. Helping people, vocation, it isn't something you have to starve for, there are structures in place where society supports you to support others.
This is why my favourite era of the Justice League made them organized peacekeepers with a place to live and regular pay. Even volunteers got to live.
I also dont like the structural thing where they're saying help others but it's always turning out poorly for the helpers. Mon-el the social parasite learns a lesson, yaay! ... and that goes poorly almost right away? Your story is not supporting your morals.
Also, the entire plot should not have happened, because quarantine is quarantine and any reasonable scan should have found a parasite or they learned nothing from SG1. He should not have been able to walk out of there with genetic changes and blood weirdness, not if the DEO were remotely competent. It made no sense even with just the video to go on. He should have been held until they understood, and that's not even weird science, it's plain old regular rules.
So that's frustrating.
But it just really annoys me when fiction says you have to volunteer your services. Like, in a world where everyone has savings and can take off work at random, maybe, but it still ain't fair. Fair pay for your work, always.
