Today I took a box off the shelves to make room for more books
and the box is full of vhs tapes.

... I may have left it too long to deal with those...

Breaks my heart. We have so many VHS tapes in storage, sitting in boxes and deteriorating. So much lovely stuff, some with rare bootleg concerts that I don't know if would be found in another format nowadays. Some with home movies. Sigh
Somehow VHS is more ephemeral than audio tapes.

it's good when things change formats but there's so much that doesnt seem to.

Some format change is good, and VHS was quite crappy as format. There were ways of conversion, but the cost of conversion, or of buying everything available in a newer format (repeatedly) ...
