But would it work
Nov. 2nd, 2021 05:47 pmThis is only bothering me because I did not get enough sleep
but
if in Pathfinder you had the Deck of Many Things
and drew some combination of cards so you had
3 wishes
and 2 Dread Wraiths
and you were sitting in the sun in a pub garden at the time so they're staggered from sunlight powerlessness so you've probably got a moment to think, but you only have three minutes to cast three wishes anyway
could you just
wish those dread wraiths were defeated
or would you have to
wish that dread wraith was defeated, and wish that dread wraith was defeated
or would you need a different wish?
Because I feel strongly like that defeat wish would not work. Like sure some stories have huge world shaking wishes, but Pathfinder says you can use a Wish to cast a lower level spell, so it feels smaller. Also if a Wish would do that it would do it for the bad guys, so, you know, not optimal?
I also feel there's a perfectly perfect spell to cast that would indeed fix this
but also feel strongly most of them should not be used in a pub garden.
There are so many spells tho. I dont know which one to try, or if its worth it.
A Dread Wraith is probably https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/undead/wraith/wraith-dread/
If the character loses they are gone gone so, you know, yikes.
And it seems like the perfect combo of wishes is
1. I wish the next card I draw is the moon
2. I wish I hadn't drawn the Skull
3. I wish I hadn't drawn the Skull
but that is a bit boring
and also
a wish can reverse the last combat round so you'd have to be drawing very very fast.
which I would be once I drew the Skull but still.
"A wish can undo a single recent event. The wish forces a reroll of any roll made within the last round (including your last turn)."
So yeah but no but
and then you'd still draw twice from the Deck.
Also a bunch of the internet thinks you can flatliners your way out of fighting the Skull thing
but
the rules as written
do not necessarily agree.
The complete rule is
So: if you want to be particularly mean about this, it could be read that
well
Defeat dread wraith or be forever destroyed.
Not just that if you get killed by the dread wraith it gets you.
If you do not defeat it, next time you die, oops time up.
Which stops the temporary death trick being very much use really.
/understatement.
... it explicitly would work for Flames, that causes enmity until one or the other of you is slain. The Fates is only available until you die so there is an optimal sequence implied.
But with The Fates its "Avoid any situation you choose, once. The reversal is only for the character who drew the card; other party members may have to endure the situation."
So you could use it to avoid drawing the cards that only effect you: Void, Donjon, Euryale.
But it seems like, using Fates, the Skull summoning a Dread Wraith would simply become not a you problem. Like sure the wraith is still there... for everyone else. Lalala cant see it no problem.
How smart are Dread Wraith anyway? Do they have an agenda? Could they do elaborate plots so they still kill you but like enough steps removed it dont matter they... do not exist in your subjective reality?
I feel like The Fates causes some peculiarities.
I think about the Deck a lot but really I just want a castle and
to level up without the fighting.
But then what to do with said level?
... run a magic school and make many magic items.
I like the Decanter of Endless Water.
Plug it in to modern tech ology just right and it's also endless electricity, which, you know, nifty.
I should actually play games instead of just turning these pieces around like Rubik's cubes.
ah well.

Skull: A dread wraith appears. The character must fight it aloneāif others help, dread wraiths appear to fight them as well. If the character is slain, she is slain forever and cannot be revived, even with a wish or a miracle.
